Question 2
what is the best method to stop smoking?...

Answers
1)   I'm not a smoker, but I'm willing to bet that half the reason smokers smoke is psychological. That being said, you need to develop a routine that will gradually ween you off of the habit and your "need" to smoke. Imagine starting an exercise program. At first you're like, "Ugh, why am I doing this?" But over time, you'll start to adapt to the changes and become better at what you're doing. It takes focus. So start by smoking a few less cigarettes over x amount of time, and the less you do it, the more of a habit you'll make not smoking. Does that make sense? - Winston

2)   Maybe try the blu cig. you can get ones that dont have nicotine in it. I don't smoke but some of my family members do and they say its the smoke burning there throat. The Blu gives you the same thing but without the nicotine or with its up to you. Hope i helped and Good luck! - Snippy

3)   I used the patches and it took about 8 weeks altogether before I felt really confident that I wouldn't want to smoke again. I smoked for around 45 years. Not smoked for just over 6 years now - JOHN H

4)   you need a new habit to replace your old habit of smoking..........pick something enjoyable! - skycastle

Any handy cold remedies?...  Sorry if i spelled that wrong but I am really sick and medicine is not helping me. I dont know where i got it from, and it will not go away. Any easy home healing secrets? Anything would be helpful! Thanks!

Answers
1)   tequila! - RB

2)   Chicken noodle soup, as plain and common as it sounds, is the number one healing remedy for any cold. Also, if your throat is bothering you, gargle salt water. I know that seems nasty and gross, but after about two times your throat feels as good as new. Seriously, it's a miracle worker. - ChristmasElf

3)   Chicken Noodle soup
DayQuil or NyQuil
Hot Toddy - peanut

4)   I was once told eat a raw onion. Don`t know if it works but you certainly don`t spread your germs around!
You do get depleted vitamin c and zinc if you have a cold, so replenishing that would help if for some strange reason you don`t take up the onion challenge! - 4thought

What is an alternative medical treatment to fibroid other than operation?...

Answers
1)   If the fibroid is not due to side effect of some medication, then homoepathic medicine Calc Flour 6x or 6th potency 2 pills twice a day for 1 month will help. One should not take a higher potency. If you can give further details including symptoms and other related problems in your body, i can help. Shantharam.bhat@yahoo.com ( there is a dot in between). In my view surgery is avoidable. - shantharam bhat

2)   Try systematic enzyme supplements. These enzymes eat away fibroids and scar tissue. More information>>>

http://www.energeticnutrition.com/vitalzym/fibroid_tumors.html
http://www.energeticnutrition.com/vitalzym/vitalzym.html - ƦєdAиgєℓ

3)   Not really, no. If they are causing you no symptoms then they don't always require treatment, they are quite benign. However, sometimes they can cause bleeding, pain and other symptoms.

There is no actual pharmacological treatment for fibroids, although management can be given for the pain and bleeding etc. There is also a class of drug known as gonadotropin releasing hormone analogue (GnRH) which reduces the amount of oestrogen in the body which causes the fibroid to shrink. This sort of treatment tends to cause symptoms and takes quite a while to work.

If things are really becoming a problem then surgery is probably the best option. The best technique is called Uterine Artery Embolisation. Basically it involves blocking the arteries that supply the fibroid so it loses it's blood supply and shrinks. The only problem is, I don't think this treatment is suitable if you wish to have children in the future. If you wish to have children in the future, Myomectomy is probably the way to go. Have a chat with your GP about it. - Rhianna

What are some really good books on alternative medicine (herbology,etc)?...  I am planning on going to school for alternative medicine in the near future. I just have to work on getting the money for it for now. And I had a talk with someone today who is going through the same thing. And she said for now it would be a good idea to be self taught. So, I would like to know if anyone who is knowledgeable in this area could direct me towards the best book(s) to use as guides.

4)   Well, first off, I would make the suggestion that since you aren't independantly wealthy, that you get a degree to be certified in Nutrition. That way you will always have another job to fall back on, and you'll be able to do "other things" until you get a practice established.

Anyhow - to the Q at hand - Linda Page, Tori Hudson, Dr. Atkins (yes, of 'that diet' fame - his text on vitamins is great), and James Duke (medical ethnobotanist for the USDA) would be some of the first names I suggest. Tori Hudson should be easy enough to find at a public library. - Tink

is it safe to give 2mg garlic capsules to a 16mnth old baby.?

Question 1
is it safe to give 2mg garlic capsules to a 16mnth old baby.?...  hi. i know that garlic capsules help protect against minor colds a infections in adults. i have ask at
chemist and they didnt know if it was safe to give to my 16mth old as she always seems to get colds and throat infection but because she is so young she cant get antibiotics which i dont really want her to have anyway. does anyone know if its safe.

Answers
1)   No - some dude from out of town

2)   You shouldn't give a baby any supplements that aren't prescribed by a doctor with a medical qualification or a nutritionist with a specialism.

Herbalists etc. do not count.

You could do your child serious harm by overdosing them on something!! - Claire Elliott

3)   No, it's not safe. Consult a qualified practitioner before giving a baby anything. You can get echinacea which is good for the immune system in liquid form, but you will still have to get professional advice on giving it to a baby. Make sure the baby is getting lots of unprocessed fresh fruit and vegetables, as they are necessary for an immune system. You could try adding small amounts of fresh garlic to vegetables or pasta sauces, as garlic is fine in normal quantities. - Magenta

4)   Sorry BUT why would any one want to give a baby garlic...... Shes a baby try her on good old fashion orange juice. good healthy food.meat veg. she should get over her colds and her little body will help her immune system to build up on its own,, when we were growing up, all the kids had cold, and remember thats why we had hankies. but your own body needs to build some resistance itself. If one child had chicken pox we were all sent round to get it. same thing really. By the way I am writing from land of the garlic France. so it would automatically be in the stews ect that the children eat. - Chickens

5)   NO.

Little kids get sick all the time. They have to get sick in order to develop antibodies! That's why kids get sick more frequently, plus they are often around other sick kids. If the pediatrician thought she was sick more frequently than normal, she would be worked up for an immune deficiency.

You don't give antibiotics for colds because colds are caused by VIRUSES, not bacteria.

Talk to the doctor about your concerns. - guber naculum

6)   Be careful with garlic, it can thin the blood.

You state that she seems to regularly get colds and infections - rather than seek to give her substances which are antibiotic (garlic), why not feed her foods that naturally support her own immune system in a more fundamental manner?

Over the centuries, prior to the advent of refrigeration, you may be aware that the means of preserving foods were primarily by drying or fermenting. Fermentation is a profoundly healthy way to preserve food because it results in (very broadly and crudely-speaking) the partial digestion of certain aspects of the food, making these more available, and also results in the proliferation of natural healthy acidophilus and other bacteria in the food, which, when consumed, help to replenish the natural flora of the digestive system. Such fermented foods include sauerkraut (fermented cabbage) and kefir (fermented milk). If you were to make these at home (not the pasteurised rubbish you see for sale in stores), and feed these to your daughter, you would improve her immune system infinitely more than you could with garlic. Estimates vary, but some assert that as much as 70% of the human immune system has it'[s foundations in the digestive system's bacterial flora.

Various mushrooms are known to stimulate the immune system but these should be used with caution unless you know what you are doing.

Kelp and other seaweeds are also known to support immune function, as are dark leafy greens. Both these foods are high in minerals and other nutrients needed by the immune system. Seaweed also contains iodine so should be used with caution, but the iodine, in moderation, is nonetheless supportive of thyroid function, which may have positive knock-on effects on certain aspects of the immune system. Again, one to use with sensible caution and moderation.

I would recommend you purchase a book by Jordan Rubin, called 'Patient Heal Thyself'. Whilst he is a controversial figure, and does frequently mention his products in the book, do not let this dissuade you from reading it - it has much to offer in terms of improving that natural bacterial flora of the body, and, by extension, the immune system.

Also, sign up for free at oneradionetwork.com - it's free and you won't get spammed. Patrick Timpone, there, has a huge array of free interviews available for download and I suggest you first listen to 2 interviews by Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride - they will answer a huge number of questions on the topic of gut health and immunity.

I would certainly avoid feeding your daughter supplements, as they are invariably standardised to a certain level of potency and this level of potency may be excessive for an infant. Much better to stick to using specific foods for your intended purpose, which have been fed to adults and infants alike for centuries. - John

When you wake up feeling not-quite-right, with a scratchy throat and maybe a bit of a headache, immediately put a pot of water on to boil. Once its nice and hot, throw a towel over your head and breathe in the steam for 5-10 minutes. Alternatively, you can take a super-steamy shower or take in a sauna. The heat zaps any nasty cold bugs still lingering in your nose, before they make it any further. The moisture prevents irritation, clears nasal passages, and breaks up any mucus that may be starting to form.

•2

Drink LOTS of water, tea, and/or juice throughout the day. Being properly hydrated helps your body heal itself. Your pee should be clear, or very nearly so.

•3

Pop a couple vitamin C supplements throughout the day. Don't go too overboard- a dose with each meal is fine. Eat citrus fruits, bell peppers, and other high vitamin C foods. Avoid dairy products, because these have a tendency to stimulate mucus production, which is exactly what you don't want if you're catching a cold! Also, don't eat a lot of fatty or rich foods- these take a lot of energy to digest, and you want your body to work on healing, not working a cheeseburger and milkshake out of your system!

•4

Sometime during the day, work out. Depending on your level of fitness, this might be a moderately paced walk, or it might be a hour of cardio. You want to work up a good sweat and get your heart beating, but be careful not to exhaust yourself. When you raise your body temperature, viruses and bacteria die- it's the same concept your body uses when you have a fever. Getting your blood moving also means that oxygen and those helpful little white blood cells make it in great quantities all over your body.

•5

Take a hot shower at the end of the day- the steam concept again. It also relaxes you and gets all the sweat off so you can....

•6

Turn in early! A couple extra hours of sleep go a long way in your body' s healing process. If you're starting to feel sick, you'll probably be a little more tired than usual anyway. Pile on an extra blanket or two to keep your body temperature kind of elevated. - ♥♥♥

3)   Drink insane amounts of water and get as much sleep as you possibly can. The amount of water you're currently visualizing? Drink more than that. - T. Nielsen hayden

4)   A cold is caused by a virus that mutates every time it's passed around. Antibiotics don't work on viruses, antiviral drugs can't keep up with the mutation and, home remedies, vitamins, supplements natural cures, etc. are a waste of money, the don;'t, and can't work, by the very nature of the cold virus. The only way to "cure" a cold, is to wait for the disease to take it's course. You can help yourself feel a bit better by keeping food in your body and drinking juices and water. Too much water, like WAY TOO MUCH is actually harmful and can strip the nutrients your body needs out of your system. Moderation is the key. - MisterTattiePie4U

Whats the difference between cravings and real hunger?...  Also, why do some people crave different things? Is it they are lacking in that certain nutrition,is it glucose related, psychological, hormonal or other.
Eg;i crave things like stirfries, thai, mushrooms and quality pizza.Other people crave stuff like cinnamon buns and othr sugar and flour stuff-i dont get that.

Answers
1)   i dont know but im hungry right now..... - CheechF

2)   Real hunger is 'patient', it doesn't just suddenly come on........cravings do. Also, if you were hungry you would eat just about anything and not just single out certain foods. can't help you with the 'why' though but i go along with the pizza. Hopes this helps a bit. - Ali

3)   With the exception of some nutritional deficiencies (iron and zinc specifically) there are no known cravings that correlate with 'cravings' - and the funny thing is, people who have those iron and zinc deficiencies (called pica) usually crave foods that have none of those nutrients in them - usually they crave ice (especially young children and expectant mothers), paper, and dirt. Go figure.

Seriously, there is no way to type up "what makes people hungry and for what" in the space allowed here. Suffice to say "real hunger" is what people who have no fat stores experience - the pics you see of people who never have food, and are all skin and bone - those people experience hunger.

{{folks who have wasting due to illness, that's another issue}}

Get a library card, take out a text in physiological psychology, and a good anatomy and physiology book - seriously, you'll enjoy it. Better yet, if you can, see if you can find a college course to take for fun. Nothing wrong with continuing to learn just for the sake of curiosity :) - Tink

4)   the things you crave say something about the specific energy-functions (meridians).
Sugar craving may say something about spleen/stomach function energy state.

And what is true hunger? I think you know only when you are completely enlightened.
Often we eat just to compensate for ... many things.
