5)   A hookah wants a lovah who will pay her moolah for her favahs. They prefer pot, I believe. - Cassi

6)   My friends and I use hookahs all the time. A hookah is an instrument with hoses that allows you to smoke 'shisha'. It is an alternative to other forms of smoking, is known to be fairly safer due to the smoke being 'cleansed' by the water in the waterdish, and the shisha comes in a wide variety of flavors. Here's an article on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hookah [very accurate, and explains more then I can] - Zexion

7)   Its a bong with several straws that come out so everyone can be smoking at the same time. Used for pot - K.Stokes

8)   Basically, It's a multi-player bong. - BobberKnob

9)   A hookah is a device for smoking. It can be used with tobacco or any of the other combustible materials that we smoke for their physical effects. The hookah, like other pipes, makes the smoking experience more pleasant by passing the smoke through a long tube before it enters the smoker's body, thus cooling it. The hookah goes a step further by passing the smoke through a water bath on its way to the user. The bowl for burning the herb sits above a tube that passes into a covered chamber and ends below the surface of a pool of water. The smoker inhales through a tube that is connected to the covered chamber above the water level. The reduction of pressure in the air space above the water causes the smoke to bubble through the water before being drawn up the smoker's tube. The water moistens the smoke and removes some of the ingredients, making the smoke less irritating to the user. It does not make the smoke safe, however. It still contains most of the tars, carcinogens and other toxins associated with whatever is being smoked.
The hookah is associated with medieval Arabic culture, and many hookahs were designed to provide a communal smoking experience, with multiple tubes for several smokers to partake at the same time. - James

Question 2
Why would they prescribe medication that isn't 100% effective or safe?...  I was recently raped and I was prescribed two medications: Combivir and Keletra. They are HIV prevention medications, however are not 100% effective or safe. They have side effects such as: vomiting, migraines, sleep disorders, eating disorders, change in mood, and also weight change. There are many more but those are just a few. If anyone has been on these two before, please let me know if you would recommend the follow through of taking them. The doctor said it is my choice, but my only issue is: If it is not 100% effective or safe, why bother??? Thank you for your help in advance!!

Answers
1)   Because they are far preferable to developing a HIV infection, which would kill you.

It's risk management. Does the potential benefit of the drugs outweigh the potential risk? - Weise Ente

2)   NOTHING is 100% safe. If you would only use things 100% safe that would rule out not only all drugs but even all foods.

Also very few medications are effective 100% of the time, people are very different and they react differently to drugs.

Why bother? Its very simple, we look at the potential risks the drug could have on a patient, the potential benefits, and other options that might have a better ratio between risk and benefit.

In your cases you were given medication that is fairly safe (risk low) to potentially prevent a dangerous life-threatening disorder with no cure (high benefit).

That is all drugs come down to, a graph of two bars- the potential risk of the drug and the potential benefit of the drug. One drug I can think of is propoxyphene, a weak opioid used to treat mild pain. Often this drug is used with the graph like I mentioned. What we find is that propoxyphene has only a minor effect on pain (lets give that a number 2 out of 10), thus it has LOW efficacy. Then we look at the second bar which evaluates efficacy, tolerability/incidence of side effects, (in this case) addiction potential, and mortality rate. What we discover is that propoxyphene has a high risk of side effects, cardiotoxicity, neurotoxicity, significant drug interactions, a high mortality rate, and significant risk of addiction.

So lets say on a scale from 1-10 we view both bars of a drug. For propoxyphene the first bar (how well it works) gets a 2, the second bard (the problems) gets about a 7 or 8.

That indicates propoxyphene is rarely an appropriate medication and in fact several countries have removed it from market and an FDA advisory board and recommended the FDA withdraw the drug. The other problem is that the doctors who still commonly prescribe it don't typically realize that it is a fairly dangerous drug.

Even using an extremely dangerous drug may be fine if its potential benefits are greater than its risks.

And you should follow thew and take the medications exactly as prescribed, if you have questions call your doctor. Also just because something can cause a side effect does not mean it will. The chance you you having any significant problems are very small and as I said the risk of not taking them is very high. Have you ever read the potential side effects for Aspirin? I don't recommend you do- there are a lot of terrible things but they are RARE.

Do what the doctor recommends and if you are unable to tolerate the medication call the doctor and talk about the problem. Don't just throw then away and not think about it again. - Mathieu

3)   Probably because nothing is 100% effective nor 100% safe. - BobberKnob

4)   Oh, your talking about the Medical Mafia.

Why?
They don't actually care about you at all, its all about the $$$.

Why bother?
The more you take, and the more side effects you develop, the more they will dope you up, the $$$ you fork out. - PCFIL B7RFLY

5)   No treatment modality is 100% safe and 100% effective.
In regards to why bother?
Well, HIV is a nasty virus which will radically affect your life making it difficult for you to form normal romantic relationships. If you go on to develop full blown AIDs you will suffer an awful lot and eventually die probably from an opportunistic infection.
You have already suffered enough.
If a short dose of these drugs stop you getting an HIV infection it will be worth it.
If the side effects are the ones listed and they will pass once you stop using the drug its a good trade off.
It may not work but to avoid contracting HIV, I'd give it a go. - Lightning

6)   nothing in the world is 100% anything, it simply violates the physical laws of the universe. plus drugs react differently in different people due to the subtle differences that occur as a result of genetic recombination and mutations. in terms of safety EVERYTHING has side effects, the only difference between western and "alternative" medicine is that the FDA requires western medicine to provide data showing effectiveness above the placebo effect, and a list of observed side effects during the drug trials. "alternative medicine" doesn't have this requirement because they are typically advertised in a way that allows them to avoid regulation. - evirustheslaye

Question 3
how to reduce the no. of spectacles ?...  Number of my spectacles is R -1.25 and L -1.00

Answers
1)   eat health food and drink water as much as u can
and keep wearing ur spectacles through the day - Zoya

2)   Eat more more green vegetable, fruits and drink daily a glass of milk.I reduce my spectacle no. By doing daily yoga and pranayama. So learn yoga and pranayama in Astha Channel at 8:15 PM Daily - Siddharth Bargate

3)   Eye YOGA - Betal S

4)   The number indicates a reading spectacles which can be reduced by looking at the cause .1. The iris muscles loosen with constant stress in habitual reading, viewing TV, infection etc. 2. Deficiency in Vitamin E in diet 3. lack of exercise to the iris muscles.
Reduce it by: 1 Yoga exercises - [srrsasan] by standing on your hands with your legs up against a wall for blood to flow in your head region for brief periods each morning 2. Supplement your diet in food rich in vitamin E 3. avoid continuous reading or watching TV or computer screen. 4. Blink your eyes for moistening the eyes and cleaning it. 5. the differentiated number in left & right eye can be corrected by bringing your index finger towards your nose from a close distance and watching the tip as you bring it closer. . . - SAGI

5)   It would help if people knew what they were talking about before posting answers.

For example "The number indicates a reading spectacles" utter rubbish. The glasses are because the person is short sighted, and should be able to read very well without them.

There also seems to be a lot of misconception about basic physiology going on too.

The figures show you're shortsighted (myopic) a diopter correction of -1.25d shows your resting focus is at 0.8m and -1.0d at 1m

Now to physiology. When the eyes' focusing muscles are relaxed your eyes are focused on infinity, as everyone knows muscles can't push only pull, so you can't get any more relaxed than totally relaxed. Nothing you can do can change the resting point of focus to make it longer - apart from correction or surgery.

As you get older - pushing 50 - you'll find your eyes no longer become able to focus shorter and you'll need to take your specs off for reading or get some kind of bi/vari focal lenses. - Nitram

Question 4
Can i take fluoxetine 40mg with multivitamins to boost my immune system?...  I am taking fluoxetine 40mg along with Aciclovir for something else, I know that these two medications are fine together but I would like to take a multivitamin to boost my immune system, is this safe to do so?

Answers
1)   You can take a multivitamin, it's not going to hurt you. Here is a list of medications that interact with Multivitamins. Hope this helps.

Medications known to interact with multivitamin

Adrucil (fluorouracil)
Alli (orlistat)
Calcijex (calcitriol)
calcitriol
capecitabine
colesevelam
doxercalciferol
fluorouracil
Hectorol (doxercalciferol)
orlistat
paricalcitol
Rocaltrol (calcitriol)
Welchol (colesevelam)
Xeloda (capecitabine)
Xenical (orlistat)
Zemplar (paricalcitol) - Jason90869

2)   yes it's fine, and will help a lot. Just do one thing and stay away from "specialty" formulas, even if it says that it's for immune system boosting. It's better to have a little more say in what you put in your body. A general Multivitamin/Multimineral should do it. For good skin support I'd try maybe one of the following: Flax seed oil; Fish oil; Evening Primrose oil. I don't get into too many herbs, I only have a trusted few I use. In general Echinacea is the most popular. Personally it does nothing for me. If you experience flushing of the face with the vitamins it's from the Niacin (B3) all you have to do is take the vitaming with food to solve it. - Scylla and Charybdis

3)   Yes you can take multivitamin tablets with fluoxetine 40mg along with Aciclovir. - SHEETAL PAREKH 1981

4)   Please remember that your body is your own possession.
Whenever it is in paid , others can simply help or advise but nobody can feel your actual suffering or the tremendous pain etc.
The body must be maintained well.
Please never experiment with yourself. Why do we wear Gloves while handling any acid solution ? Just to protect our hands and skin.
Similarly please never experiment with these medicines. Different chemicals have different effects on our body. Some are allergic to Penicillin , some to Aspirin etc.
Therefore, please do not seek such advice from us. After all you will suffer if the medicine reacts adversely.
Do you get my message.
Kindly consult a doctor . - PARTHA R

5)   I am afraid excess vitamins will do nothing to your immune system. Vitamin supplements are best avoided. In the UK at least deficiencies are rare and there is neither need nor therapeutic advantage in taking supplements. Recently there has been increasing concerns about what is effectively overdosing on synthetic vitamins. The fat soluble vitamins are the most potentially toxic, A to the eye, D to the kidney K to the blood clotting mechanism and E appears to increase all cause mortality. The most recent, and one of the most worrying papers concerns women taking multivitamins. There appears to be an associated 19% increase in the risk of breast cancer in women on multivitamin tablets, though further investigation is required to confirm that the risk is causal. - Dr Frank
