Why doesn't the FDA have a definition for "Natural?"?

Question 1
Why doesn't the FDA have a definition for "Natural?"?...  The FDA says it can't say that Vermont maple syrup that uses the word Natural in it's label a problem because it has not defined the word yet.

Answers
1)   Its a difficult thing to define.
Would you like to throw your hat into the ring and give it a try? - Lightning

2)   A) because as they will tell you, they have far more important things to do.
B) because its a term that is meaningless - after all, arsenic is natural as well. You wouldn't want your syrup and arsenic in the same catagory, would you ;)
C) they fear that usage of the term would mislead consumers into thinking that a product is healthier for them (see example of arsenic above) - Tink

3)   Because the FDA doesn't regulate food, it only regulates drugs---regulating the food and labeling it accordingly is really the job of the USDA(United States Department of Agriculture). The USDA is the one who inspects food, determines if it meets the qualification of "natural" or "organic" and then provides the label. As far as supplements go: they cannot be labeled by the FDA because they are considered "food supplements", i.e. Vitamins and minerals--but the USDA cannot label them because a lot of those supplements are manufactured with artificial ingredients(i.e. do you really know what your multi-vitamin is made of)----meaning that a lot of the supplements we buy neither fall into the category of drugs nor the category of food, therewith creating a totally unregulated market.....hope this helps - What Will The Spill Kill?

4)   Try to come up with a definition of natural.

You can't do it. It's a vague term that is meaningless, so they don't bother. They have more important things to do. - Weise Ente

5)   I got lost in the double negatives.

Can you redefine the question?

The FDA says
it can't say that
Vermont maple syrup

Ok, so the FDA says it can't comment on vermont syrop

that uses the word Natural in it's label a problem because it has not defined the word yet.

There you come down to gibberish.

"that uses the word Natural in it's label a problem because"

Does not make sense. Have another go - Nitram

6)   Natural may be said to be anything that is not supernatural... - Gary Y

Question 2
What kind of doctor would I be considered if I wanted to work with nutrition, natural remedies....?...  I like to cook and prepare food, and I love to study nutrition.
But, nutritionists don't make that great of money,
so I want to incorporate other more advanced occupations.
My mother speaks of having gone to a "natural doctor that promotes wellness and long term treatment".
I'd also like to work with inpatients, if possible. If not, that's fine.

But, is there any type of 'doctor' that does this?

I'm big on natural/herbal, being healthy. That's what I'd like to have in my career as well.
Also, I'm wanting to take a psychology course while I'm still in highschool.
Maybe that could be added to what I could be and what I'll study in college?
I found it,
it's not osteopathic,
it is naturopathic.

But thank you :)

Dietitians and nutritionists are health professionals who study and apply the principles of nutrition and food management. There are several kinds of dietitians and nutritionists. The largest group is made up of administrative dietitians. Administrative dietitians manage food services in hospitals, schools, nursing homes, restaurants, industrial plants, military bases, and other institutions. They plan and direct the purchase and preparation of food, as well as supervise other food service workers. Administrative dietitians ensure that the meals served are nutritious, appetizing, and within the institution's budget.
Clinical dietitians plan meals for hospital patients and others who have special dietary needs. They assess patients' nutritional needs, confer with doctors, and may use computers to analyze nutritional intake. Sometimes they teach people who need special diets how to plan and prepare foods at home.

Question 3
Why was my acupressure massage excruciatingly painful?...  I have visited an acupressure massage place in Queens several times over the past year. Certain pressure points are always painful and uncomfortable (not in the good way) during the massage.
Today I went and whenever he slid his fingers along the left side of my upper back and lower back, I felt excruciating pain. He then dug his fingers into my hip, causing me to whimper and cry (despite how much I was trying to relax and allow him to work through it.)

I was squirming on the bed and reflexively pushed his hand away twice. He said it would "feel better tomorrow." He then dug his fingers on the back inner side of my knee and in various places on my calf causing INsane amounts of pain (not so painful on the right side.) Following the massage he pointed to a chart that told me that the pain was from my sciatic nerve.
He didn't speak English very well so I couldn't follow up. What causes this sciatic nerve pain? Do most people want to die during a really good accupressure massage, or was this level of pain unnecessary?
I do Not think that I have Sciatica.

I am 24 years old. I was in a car accident a few years ago that screwed up my neck. I was hit by a car in June that caused some pain on the left side, but was told it was muscle spasm, and haven't had pain since. I am also overweight.

Thank you!

1)   Acupressure is pre-scientific nonsense based on a false premise of meridians and acupuncture points. So you are receiving treatment from someone who really has no idea what he is doing. My only advice is to seek proper treatments from properly trained science-based practitioners. - Gary Y

2)   OH MY GOD, STOP GOING! Despite what people say, pain doesn't equal gain. Acupressure is essentially acupuncture, without the needles. "Real" acupuncture has been proven no more effective than fake acupuncture in clinical trials.

Do you believe that you can unblock mystical, undetectable energy in the human body, which will promote healing? If you don't, I should have convinced you it's BS.

I don't want to speculate as to what you should do for your pain, but I can tell you that the sciatic nerve doesn't have anything to do with your neck. It starts in the lower back, running down the leg. Sciatica It most commonly caused by the compression of the nerve, through a spinal disc herniation (a herniated inter-vertebral disc in the spine), or from roughening, enlarging, and/or misalignment of the vertebrae.

I suggest you see your doctor, maybe he can suggest a treatment that's based in reality. - Nate

3)   go and see a real doctor and ask for a referral to a physiotherapist of something. - Nitram

Question 4
whats smoking salvia like?...  I've heard a lot of people say they had the absolute worst time ever smoking salvia and it felt like it detached them from reality and they were in alternate universe and they had absolutely no control over there body? can this really happen?

Answers
1)   that's all true, you are completely detatched from your body, and i can see why people would call it horrible. ive taken it about 10 times, the first time was very strange, it was very funny as well, i like to expermient with altered mind states, this drug literally sends you mad for about 10 minutes. its fun and i love it - mariahsaintly

2)   WTH? You really need to...not care. - Alicia P

3)   Haha how does that sound bad? They probably didn't go into it with the right mindset. It's a pretty crazy trip, but if you're stressed or freaking out, you'll have a bad trip. You just have to let it take you wherever it wants; don't fight it. I've had some of the greatest times of my life on salvia. But ya, out-of-body experiences are really common and if you don't want them, don't smoke salvia. Even if you have a bad trip, it's over before you can fully realize how insane you feel. They were all enjoyable for me though. Even smoking very little can get you zoned without making you trip too hard. - bh_is_god

4)   I love salvia! I cant really explain what its like? my first time was amazing! It tastes horrible! but totally worth it! I was smoking in my shed in the backyard lol and I thought I was in like a grocery store! Like I knew I was in my shed but it still felt like I was there? It doesnt last long at all but its really fun for the time it does. it's worth a try =) I have fun when i smoke it - CokaeenaGirl
