How can I get my mom to listen to me?

Question 1
How can I get my mom to listen to me?...  I really believe I have a skin picking disorder. I've looked it up and read about it. I use to bite my nails all da time until I got braces then I stoped because it hurt when I had the braces on. I always pick my scabs. I started when I was about 12 and ever since then I never could stop. When I get bored and start looking at my scabs I just have to pick them. Also when I get stressed, sad or mad I noticed I start picking my scabs. I do this every other day or 2 days. I just can't help it and I can't stop. Maybe it's just a bad habbit. My mom just tells me to stop and u don't want your skin to look ugly and dark marks on your skin. I did one time try to stop but i just can't. Maybe she is right but I really think I do. What can I do to convince her?

Answers
1)   backhand her and when she falls to the floor stand above her and say "what do you think now, woman?!" - ThatOneGuyOverThere

2)   Punch the b1tch. - Ken W

3)   try talking to her calmly about it and say you would really like to know. Tell her your reasons for doing it, then she may want to talk about it and help out. - bri bri

4)   Just go up to her and say you want to have a serious conversation. Say it's important and you need her. I hope i helped. - Lauryn

5)   You might be suffering from a form of OCD (Obsessive compulsive disorder) Tell her straight you know yourself better then anyone else and see a Doctor, if you do suffer OCD some meds can help. Although it also might be a phase or a really bad habit, when you feel the need to pick at your scabs or skin do something else until the urges pass this can sometimes help break the cycle. - Tyrant

6)   Eh, frequent scab picking is a fourm of self injury (like cutting). That's why your mom wants you to stop. Maybe you need therapy?

The only thing I can tell you is to tell your mom it's just a bad habbit and leave it at that. - Kate

7)   Talk to her about it. I have the same issue, I've gotten better with time but my mom has always done the same. You should also tell her that she's helping when she does that because it stops you right as you're doing it. While the lectures aren't fun, every time she starts in, just be nice and take the advice and also repeat your situation. You should also ask her about seeing a dermatologist because they can do an assessment on your skin and possibly help heal it so that you eventually will do less or no picking at all. For nails, my cousin used to bite hers bloody - even chewing the layers off of the top. She now goes to get a fake set put on every time her current acrylics get worn. In this way she lost most of her drive to chew and they actually protect her real nails. It can cause nail fungus as well as nail bed damage if not replaced properly so if you chose that method find a really, really good manicurist and don't go for the cheap stuff. They make polish that is bitter to help with the chewing if acrylics aren't your choice but you have to always use it. In the mean time, buy yourself facial cleansing cloths to put in your purse and extras at home/work/other places you frequent. Not just for your face though, keep your hands clean with them - soap and cleansers can dry your hands. I have some of the target brand exfoliant cloths on my night stand so if I am laying there and I think I forgot to wash my face, I can use them instead (because I know that once I'm comfy I would rather just skip it). By always keeping clean hands (and especially under my nails) even if I do touch my face, there isn't new bacteria to transfer. But you have to be very vigilant about hand washing and keeping your face clean. I reset my make up after about 6 hours because the oil and dirt builds up. This way I know it hasn't had time to sit in my pores and create new pimples/blackheads which lead to scabs later that will drive me to pick. Plus I look fresher :) because your face will absorb the makeup itself and eventually settle in lines or creases that form with facial expression. Yes it's true, even young people without wrinkles and lines can look bad in makeup simply because it begins to settle throughout the day. - ¤ nOeLaNa ¤

5)   Raw honey. Manila honey is the best, but you probably won't find any locally. Raw honey has a lot of things in it that get refined out to make it look clearer. A lot of honey is diluted with corn syrup to make it cheaper. So, the best would be : Manuka honey, then raw organic honey, then organic honey. Other than that, try gargling with hydrogen peroxide. If you are lucky enough to find raw organic honey, take a tablespoon and let it dissolve slowly in your mouth, do not just swallow it. And don't drink anything for 15 minutes afterward. - Robert G

I have heard that cinnamon and vinegar can help but neither is a replacement for insulin.

Is it possible to improve your eyesight?

Question 1
Is it possible to improve your eyesight?...  Are there any ways that you can improve your eyesight without and surgery? Any help would be appreciated. No food advice either!

Answers
1)   Read in dim lighting. Contrary to the old wives tale if you can read in the dark it actually means you have strong eyesight. - Kate[케이트]

2)   you can wear spects.if not then you can do physical exercises ie yoga.yoga does work try it. - Namrata

3)   well yes you can do some eye exercises from yoga class.it does help . - Resha Shrestha

4)   there is no scientifically proven way to improve your eyesight, but i believe there are some exercizes that you can do that "supposedly" help strengthen it. again, this hasn't been proven.

One of the most critical component to helping improve your vision is to do eye strengthening and relaxation exercising. One of the most popular exercises in Palming. Palming requires you to sit comfortably and cover your eyes with your hands, make sure you rub your hands together to create some warmth before covering your eyes.

Ensure there is no light coming through, if you see any traces simply imagine that it is completely dark. Focus on your breathing by taking slow deep breathes. Do this for 3 minutes at a time while and visualise something interesting.

also, stop wearing glasses. this sounds weird, but its true. vision correcting lenses actually make you're eye sight worse. - Lydia

5)   definitly. the easiest ways are
1.) use an optical flipper
- this is really easy to use, buy one and read the directions :)
- like seriously, this can make your eyesight 20-20 again, and all you have to do is use it while your reading
- i suggest looking up this product if you dont know what this is

2.) wear night contacts
- this type of technology has been out for a while, it isnt spacificly made to make your eyesight better, but it does if you wear them every night (one thing these contacts can gaurantee is that your eyesigh will NOT get worse

3.) never read of do anything in the dark

4.) dont squint

5.) dont read slantwise (as in dont read upsidedown, ect, always read upright)

6.) do eye exercises, look far, and than look close

7.) do NOT read before sleep

8.) and at last resort, GET LASIK :D (yea, i just put this in for the heck of it) - Christina Liang

6)   Yes, actually my uncle don't wear glasses cause he made every day eye exercises and looked to the horizon for a couple of years. The eye lenses helps to stop the lack of eyesight too but don't fix it. - kathe c

7)   There's a program called Vision Without Glasses that's based on the Bate's method. It uses a series of exercises to strengthen the muscles around the eyes. It claims to work for all kinds of vision problems. I haven't used it but I'm thinking about it. You may want to check it out. http://bit.ly/ijn1DZ - Kirazz

8)   No it's not. There is no exercise that will help your eyes. Also, virtually all the advice you've received so far about keeping your eyesight is wrong. Things like reading in the dark or before bed can cause eye fatigue, but not damage. Wearing glasses absolutely does NOT make your eyesight worse. This insane myth is based on perceptions. After you become accustomed to your glasses when you remove them your natural eyesight seems much worse by comparison to the time before you had glasses. People mistakenly believe that this means your eyes are worse, but actually you just are no longer able to settle for how bad your eyes really are. My great-grandfather wore glasses every day of his life from the time he was 3 until he died at 99. If wearing glasses made your eyes worse, why didn't he go blind after 96 years of wearing them? - William T

Where can I find a certified Quantum Elbowologist?...  Hi,

I suffer from low self-esteem and depression.
Recently I have started chakra meditation, but with little results.

Some people here talk about the Elbow Chakra. This is something I have never heard of.
I am also unable to find any books, but somebody told me I can find a certified Quantum Elbowologist.

Can somebody help me with addresses, phonenumbers, websites or other resources?
Sometimes the feeling is unbearable, it would be nice if this could offer me some relief.

Thanks a lot.
@ Shohag Khan
I know some hospitals allow or offer reiki treatments, but after googling, I cannot find any hospital offering info about Quantum Elbowology. This seems to be really a new technique.
@Gary

Thanks for your information, but still on the Facebook group, there is no information about how to learn it, only an unanswered question in their forum. Strange...

Answers
1)   in hospital - Shohag Khan

2)   Well wouldn't you know, there's a facebook group: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=125998830756149

You may also be interested in Elbology which is an ancient elbow reading practice: http://www.elbology.com/

And I would recommend a chat with your family doctor, just to be on the safe side. - Gary Y

3)   Johanna,

it's indeed hard to find any specific information about Quantum Elbowology.

Anyway, if you suffer from those mental discomforts since a long time, it's better to find some professional help.
Anti-depressants can help you in the process, even placebos of anti-depressants do a great job. - Pietro

4)   Dear Johanna,

QE was an invention of a group of skeptics here in Yahoo Answers as a way to poke fun at the abuse of the word "quantum" and other technical jargon by cranks and quacks. Quantum Elbowology can be anything you want it to be because it does not exist except as a joke.

If you are suffering from low-self esteem and depression I would suggest you get professional help and counseling or even just talk to someone like your parents or friends (or even your clergy if you're religious).

Good luck. Hope everything turns out well. - angrydoc

5)   Sure , there is a leprechaun who practices quantum elbowology. His number is 666-bullshit - Mistress

6)   Dear Aristo/Avicenna/whatever you want to call yourself today (I notice Pietro is also one of your accounts, why would you answer your own question? Nevermind......)

Quantum Elbowology is the science of elbowic chakra manipulation. The elbows are manipulated and focused quantumly by a process related to the uncertainty principle. Negative chakric energy is released via a quantum bridge betwixt the elbow and base chakras, tempered via a remote channeling effect from the crown chakra. (I could explain it further but I'm sure a non-scientist such as yourself would struggle to comprehend what is after all on the very cutting edge of mankind's understanding.)

The resulting beneficial effect has been scientifically shown to impact positively on a wide range of illnesses and a form of QE has been used for over 5,000 years so obviously it must work.

Scientists are developing this method at the moment and soon it will be available in all hospitals, all over the world of that I am very sure. Currently it is practised by a very small and elite group of researchers, that's why there is little public information available.

(The elbow chakra itself has been covered in depth and anyone with even a basic understanding of chakras are aware of them. Clearly you know very little about this subject so here's some recommended reading specifically covering elbow chakras: http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=OegzuoG-afoC&pg=PA79&dq=elbow+chakras&hl=en&ei=PqwcTeWyGMqXhQfIs93zDQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CCYQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=elbow%20chakras&f=false http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=fH70iXWhBmoC&pg=PA154&dq=elbow+chakras&hl=en&ei=PqwcTeWyGMqXhQfIs93zDQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=2&ved=0CCsQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q=elbow%20chakras&f=false )

It must be noted that low self-esteem cannot be treated by QE. You could try getting a proper education so you don't feel so inferior when surrounded by other more intelligent people? It has to be worth a go! - dave

7)   As much fun as I like to have with it (some of the fellows are 'hurt-you'-funny when they are on a roll) - - Angry Doc has your answer....It's made up....that's why you aren't going to find a practictioner, or a method for it...

I would see a physician, and or a therapist for the depression - and for the self esteem, be mindful that the best way to acquire esteem, is through esteemable acts.

Good luck - Be well

Quamtum Elbowology - will it cure me?...  I have a vague sense of unease, some minor backpain and off and on abdominal pain. I also have more money than sense. I was wondering if quantum elbowology could be for me?

Answers
1)   More money than sense eh? Step into my office. I'm a certified QE practitioner. - angrydoc

2)   Yes, you would be an IDEAL candidate!

You would probably require maybe 10-20 sessions over a period of 5-10 weeks. Don't forget to make sure you see a doctor to assess your condition first and if the doctor cannot help your sense of unease then QE definitely can, as long as you are a receptive person who is open-minded and able to accept anything, however far-fetched it may initially appear. - dave

3)   The only way you can get a true answer,
is answering it yourself.
The reason why you didn't know that is, as you said :
you have more money than sense.

If you have more money than sense however,
I would chose for surgery.

The hospital will be very enthusiast
to accept you for such senseless operations with a big smile
and lots of professionality.

And to be honest (in case your sense has grown in the meanwhile),
especially in the case of backpain an abdominal pain,
9 days of QE will be sufficient,
to take away the pain
and to make you feel
like you've never felt before.

Just try it.

what could be a remedy to lower my stomach acidity.?...  In additional to this I drink maybe 5-6 times cups of green tea, and 1-2 times cup of coffee with little sugar a day, water 2-3 cups also. Now the thing is lately I feel in my saliva/mouth the acidity and don't know what causes.

Answers
1)   Firstly make sure you are not drinking any liquids either 1/2 hour before a meal and and hour and a half after a meal as this waters down your natural acids in your stomach and makes your body create more acid to break down the food eaten. Secondly go buy some pH acid/alkaline test strips which only cost a couple of dollars on eBay and test your body's acid levels. If your acid levels are too high you need to look at your diet and there are many good websites and books around to start you off in the right direction. Start googling. Good books are The Ultimate pH Solution by Michelle Schoffro, Alkalize or Die by Theodore Baroody and The Optimum Nutrition Bible by Patrick Holford.
PS - Sugar especially fake sugars used in diet drinks etc. are your worst enemy. And then a bad diet.
Good luck. - Jenny

2)   Wheatgrass and barley are great alkalizers. These may help counter acidity. - Lightspeed21

3)   Increased stomach acidity is different than systemic acidity. Systemic acidity is when your overall body pH is lower than optimum. That is mostly due to your diet. Increased stomach acidity (pain, burning and indigestion) is usually do to anxiety or a more complicated condition. More often than not it is due to something aggravating your stomach due to anxiety, fear, aggrevation etc. So what to do?? The obvious first thing to do is to try and deal with whatever is causing your anxiety, worry, fear etc which will decrease the amount of acid your stomach secretes. The problem is --acid is produced in your stomach when you have anxiety, worry...etc . There is not necessarily any food in your stomach that the acid needs to digest so it "burns" your stomach lining... Drinking lots and lots of water helps throughout the day as well as keep away from foods that greatly increase acid production in the stomach like meats... Again, the primary solution is to figure out WHY you have anxiety , fear worry etc and deal with that.. - Lou Russo

4)   If you're drinking lots of tea and coffee on an empty stomach most people will feel irritated. Try eating something first. This is not a case of hyperacidity -- in most cases i't's because you don't have enough stomach acid. - thenoseknows

Question 2
Does Homeopathy work?...  Everyone should be able to answer this question - repost - I block noone - not even those who send me hate-mail

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/articl…

The DM lol - well ok

According to today's report in the Daily Mail, Homeopathy is reported to alleviate allergies in accordance with over a hundred other studies, contrary to negative comments by armchair critics.

This adds to recent studies already published by the Indian Institute of Technology.
This negates the bad press that was generated in the UK this spring, but despite that, Homeopathy still has the support of the UK government and the National Health Service.

Since the push is on, Homeopathy is responding to the challenge.

i wish the skeptics would be honest and admit their ignorance as well

So the question - as stated -
Does Homeopathy work?
Do any doctors, chiropractors, osteopaths wish to distance themselves from this 'treatment'?
Can we all see the real controlled trials for it?
Has anyone claimed the JREF prize for being able to tell the difference form a homeopathic treatment and water?

I could do with a cool million if it's against your principles to claim the money :)

Answers
1)   according to homeopathy if you poured a bottle of a concentrated preparation into the sea in wales it should be able to cure a man in new york, if you had a gallon of preparation to obtain a standard 30c mixture there is not enough water on the planet to dilute it (including all the oceans) I think that puts it in perspective, while the idea MAY work the concentrations used are absurd - Harley Drive

2)   I don't think so. . .Tim.

I wish I got hate-mail. Have you seen Richard Dawkins read his? Hilarious stuff. - Nate

3)   Homeopathy was first brought by Hahnemann, a german physician, who was disillusioned by conventional medical school and practices. Homeopathy relies on the law of similars. So if one is allergic to bees, the remedy would be to ingest bee parts in a very diluted form (succussion) that is supposed to remedy your allergy. Another example is the homeopathic remedy for babies who suffer from teething by giving them small amounts of caffeine, and belladona in very dilute forms. The problem I have with homeopathy is that it lacks sufficient evidence for efficacy and safety in clinical trials and since it is not regulated by the Food and Drug administration the amounts of the ingredients are also unregulated. Even though most of the medications are so dilute, it PROBABLY wouldn't cause direct harm, however if it homeopathic remedies were to be given in place of medication that has known efficacy and safety profiles, it could prolong the sickness instead of getting legitimate medical therapy and possibly leading to further complications when left untreated. The dose-response has been proven by science over and over. The idea that giving someone a substance that is so dilute, that there is basically no active ingredient left has no evidence to support its use. I find it unethical to promote a product that does not have sufficient clinical evidence of its safety or efficacy. I would not be able to sleep at night knowing I am collecting money from a poor family who desperately would like to cure their child's sickness with a medicine that has no intrinsic value. Hyland who created the teething tablets mentioned above voluntarily recalled their product when the FDA found that there were levels of belladonna in the tablets that were unsafe for children..leading to seizures. I believe in evidence- based medicine. - lynn25

4)   i don't know, and the truth is, neither do you. - Mr E

5)   lol... The Daily Fail...

I guess we need to now throw out everything we know about chemistry, physics, biology and invoke new sciences to cover 'vital life forces', 'like cures like' and 'water has a memory'. It's going to be difficult given we don't have a shred of evidence for any of these concepts...

One would have to be either paranoid or con artist to block skeptical opinion of this article.

PS: @nate - if you want a good laugh regarding hate mail, check out my friend Peter Bowditch's at ratbags.com: http://ratbags.com/rsoles/files/mailbox.htm - Gary Y

6)   Without reading your url, I can say yes, homeopathy works.
I say this based on my own experience with it. A placebo can not do for
the sciatic nerve what homeopathy did!

3)   Eat spicy foods!
Hot mustard,

They will open you up. - Eddie

4)   The goal of rhinitis treatment is to prevent or reduce the symptoms caused by the inflammation of affected tissues. In cases of allergic rhinitis, the most effective way to decrease allergic symptoms is to completely avoid the allergen. Vasomotor rhinitis can be brought under a measure of control through avoidance of irritants, though many irritants, such as weather changes, are uncontrollable.

Allergic rhinitis can typically be treated much like any other allergic condition. Eliminating exposure to allergens is the most effective preventive measure, but requires consistent effort. Many people with pollen allergies reduce their exposure by remaining indoors during hay fever season, particularly in the morning and evening, when outdoor pollen levels are at their highest. Closing all the windows and doors prevents wind-borne pollen from entering the home or office. When traveling in a vehicle, closing all the windows reduces exposure. Air conditioners are reasonably effective filters, and special pollen filters can be fitted to both home and vehicle air conditioning systems.

Rinsing is very often recommended as part of the healing process after sinus or nasal surgery. For this rinse, boiled or distilled water is only necessary during recovery from surgery, as the entire contents of the bottle is used.

Therapeutic efficacy of complementary-alternative treatments is not supported by currently available evidence. Some evidence shows that acupuncture is effective for rhinitis while other evidence does not. The overall quality of evidence, however, is poor.

Hope it helps. - Yuangzhong Huang

5)   Pineapple. It has natural anti-histamines. If you have severe allergies, this won't help much, but it is great for reducing the symptoms. A glass of pineapple juice a day.

Apparently, a good acupuncturist can get rid of hay fever. They treat you during winter in preparation for the spring. I haven't tried this for my hay fever because I forget about it during winter.

The first website below lists many alternative allergy treatments.

The other alternative is to investigate the emotional reason for the allergy. My own personal experience bears this one out - I live in Melbourne, Australia which is one of the two worst places in the Western world for hay fever and with everyone else complaining of a very bad year I have had a very mild one. "Louise Hay ascribes allergies to denying one's own power, to aversion to certain people, and hay fever to emotional congestion, a belief in persecution, to guilt, and fear of the calendar. Thorwald Dethlefsen and Rüdiger Dahlke, MD, in their book,"The Healing Power of Illness," think allergies arise from aggression precipitated out of the psyche into the physical body, that allergic people do not recognize their aggression and do not live it out. We know that fake roses can cause an allergic attack in one allergic to roses, or the picture of a cat can do the same with people sensitive to cats; thus, the allergic response does not require the presence of the "actual" allergen (or, what is the actual allergen, but a form of fear?)."

Good luck! - Theresa

After that, i am suffering from constipation. On the advise of the doctor i took Dulcolax two tablet to reverse the effect of lopamide. Everty thing was alright for three days and after that i was back to square one. It was only a temporary releif. I am 40 year old male. I eat a banana each in the after noon and one after dinner in the night. Somehow, constipation still persists. Please suggest me a remedy.

Answers
1)   Now go with natural fibre food e.g. salad, vegetables , papaya in fruits and avoid banana for few days till you are cured. Have fresh natural juice a glass or so preferably extracted at home and have plenty of water.Avoid Coffee. hope you will be at your normal self soon. - dev bedi

2)   IF you have no health issues...eat bran and fruit for breakfast, lettuce and other green veges for lunch and dinner. Drink plenty of water...decrease intake of cheese

drink plenty of fluids daily, eat dietary fiber, and exercise.

Avoid alcohol and caffeinated beverages such as coffee, tea, and cola drinks. These are diuretics, which eliminate water from your body and contribute to dehydration.

hope this helps - FL

3)   Sounds like you could have a gallbladder problem. Light colored stools? Pain after eating oily food? Overweight/easy to gain weight? Sometimes that can cause the difficulty passing bowls. You could be stressed and retaining it, if you don't eat on schedule your body also retains food incase their is another long period in between meals.

Hope this helps! - Die, Dai, Dai-suki

4)   eat high fiber diet, lot of green leafy vegetables, drink lot of water.

apart from that Esobgol will help, it is a ayurvedic laxative preparation.

get well soon. - pearl M

5)   Most cases of constipation respond to conservative treatment such as dietary and lifestyle changes or mild laxatives.

Dietary changes include getting enough of the recommended daily amount of fiber (20 to 35 grams), drinking 64 ounces of water or juice a day, and limiting foods that have little or no fiber, such as ice cream, cheese, meat and processed foods.

Lifestyle changes consist of exercising, reserving enough time to have a bowel movement and having a bowel movement when needed.

Laxatives may be recommended if the above changes did not help the constipation.

There are four types of laxatives - bulk-forming, stimulant, lubricant and saline. Bulk-forming laxatives, such as Metamucil, Citrucel and Serutan increase the volume of feces, making them softer and easier to pass. Stimulant laxatives, such as Correctol, Ex-Lax, Dulcolax, Purge, Feen-A-Mint and Senokot stimulate the intestinal wall to contract. Lubricant laxatives, such as mineral oil, soften the stool so it is easier to pass. Saline laxatives, such as Milk of Magnesia, Citrate of Magnesia and Haley's M-O, increase the concentration of salts within the feces. - Jeniv the Brit

6)   Use Anjeer. You can buy Anjeer slices from any super bazar.Put one Anjeer slice in 1/2 cup luke warm water and leave it for 5-6 hours.Eat this slice and drink the remaining water before sleep. It works. - ALOK S

7)   Some good advice above - definitely increase the amount of fibre and whole grains in your diet. Another thing I would suggest would be to drink at least 1-2 litres of water everyday. Sometimes constipation can result for dehydration.

Best of Luck! - neels12

8)   Yea there is an herbal supplement you can take called triphala. Triphala is a combination of 3 fruits; used for digestive tract and intestinal cleansing. It also has natural laxative properties. They have it here: http://www.naturesformulary.com/Products/56-triphala.aspx - Lindsey M

Pills that take away emotions?...  What are these pills called? Is there anyway i can get pills to take away my emotions if i take them, i'm 15 years old and could i get them? Thanks xxx
No, i don't mean anti depressants.

Answers
1)   they are called antidepressants!

grow up and learn to deal with your emotions, when you are older you will realise that 15 was a great age with not much stress and a lot of fun times. mae sure you cherish it! - Ellabombella

2)   Some are called anti-depressants. You need a prescription from the doctor. I don't believe in them. Yes I do think there are some cases of severe depression however the test is an oral one. Not one where the can see it to find it. I think depression is over rated. An excuse to make money and a way to keep people under control. The real fact of it is that humans are not meant to work and serve in an institutionalized system. As they say moderation in all things. I do believe that includes work, employment, schools, etc... Sometimes depression, rage or temper tantrums are caused by environment among many other things such as mental illness. - EloraRain

3)   Being depressed has nothing to do with being immature or needing to grow up. Depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain and that is something that we have no control over. You should talk to your doctor about the way you're feeling. Sometimes a change in diet and exercise can do wonders with depression, and pills aren't needed. Only a doctor can determine that. - Stacey Brabbin

4)   These people clearly don't know what they're talking about.

Depression is a REAL condition. These people have obviously never suffered from it..

Anyway.. I think you're talking about antidepressants.. And you can just talk to your parents about it and they'll take you to a doctor and the doctor will give you a prescription for them if he/she thinks you need them.. - Michelle

5)   anti-depressants, you need a prescription for them - Noodles

6)   ANTIDEPRESSANTS DO NOT TAKE AWAY EMOTIONS. People really don't know what they are talking about. - Foffion

7)   There's no such thing.
Antidepressants do not remove emotions and have terrible negative/toxic side effects. They have also been proven not to be effective. - thenoseknows

8)   Not really, but as previously mentioned, many psych drugs like thorazine blunt emotions temporarily. You just...don't care. Others simply make you feel BAD.

Snake root/reseperine works similarly, but that can be dangerous, especially if you have low blood pressure or are depression prone.

At 15, you're supposed to be feeling all sorts of obnoxious, possibly horrible feelings. That's biology. Trying to force it otherwise will result in severe mental illness later in life...and not that much later. - Kaviani999

9)   Try counseling.
This is an alternative medicine forum, taking pills is not an alternative form of medicine! Unfortunately, it is the norm. Good luck - Beth

Question 4
What's the quickest way to elevate Vitamin D levels?...  After two years of debilitating widely diffused chronic pain and being confined to a wheelchair, I have finally been diagnosed for Osteomalacia, a disease that is caused by severe long term Vitamin D deficiency. I have also put on a lot of weight, due to non-movement and the vitamin D deficiency.

Two months ago, I was administered an oral dose of Sterogyl 600,000 iu. I was tested two weeks ago, and my level had gone up a little bit to 5 nmol/L. I was then injected with another dose of Sterogyl 600,000 iu.

I live in France, and came to Australia a week ago to spend time with my family.
So far, I've been soaking up the sun for approx 30 mins a day with my arms, legs and face exposed with no sunscreen. I've also been taking 4000 iu of vegetarian vitamin D .

However, going online I've discovered that there are two different types of Vitamin D- D2 and D3...

I'm a little concerned, as it seems that D3 is more effective? The Sterogyl that I was injected with is D2.
I want to get well and out of this wheelchair, and the doctors really don't seem to know alot about Vitamin D!!
I'm begging anyone who has recovered or who knows a bit about the subject, to please help me put me on the right track.
I'm not expecting an overnight miracle, but I would like to be confidant that what I'm doing is the most efficient and prompt method of getting well.

I'm very very motivated and prepared to do whatever it takes to get better. Cod liver oil included!!!

Thankyou so much in advance - at the moment I feel so lost!!!!

Answers
1)   You know there are other reason for osteomalacia. Kidney dysfunction, acidosis, liver problems and phosphate depletion. Make sure they are all normal. The best way to get Vit D is sunlight. You can also take supplements.. D2 and D3 does not have any real biological activity. Those forms must be converted into cholecalciferol the active form in the kidney or liver. That's why those organs must be functioning correctly. You can take Vitamin D supplements as well but remember that it is a fat soluble vitamin which means it is stored and you can get too much of it. Good luck - Lou Russo

2)   You need weight bearing exercise, you need to go to Mayo Clinic Rochester Minnesota. - MrNeutral

3)   It sounds like you may be a vegetarian (^_^). There was a good article about vitamin D in "Natural Health and Vegetarian Life" magazine a couple of issues ago. I've just tried searching their website but didn't have any luck with it. (It is the magazine of the Australian Vegetarian Society.) The first answer here seems very comprehensive. Good luck with regaining your health. - Sheila

4)   Just go any pharmacy and ask, "Vitamin D complex" that's it! - Justin

5)   I'm currently deficient in vitamin D and only have gone from 30 to 40nmol/L in 6 months...trying to get to optimal 200nmol/l. I'm taking D3 (yes this is more effective) in liquid form...i take 5000IU a day. I did a bit more research as to why it's taking forever! to boost my levels and i found there are co factors needed in order to utilize vitamin D properly.

Magnesium (most important), zinc, vitamin K2, boron and vitamin A. I have a few of these deficiencies. Zinc deficiency is an easy test i had done for free at a pharmacy but you may need to buy the zinc sulfate and do the test at home. A zinc deficiency explains why i have to add a LOT of salt to my chicken lol (zinc is essential for maintaining your senses of taste and smell). Check the link about the zinc taste teste >>>http://www.diabetesexplained.com/zinc-diagnostic-test.html

Calcium cannot absorb without vitamin D. Calcium and magnesium work together (magnesium deficiency is one of the causes for vitamin D deficiency) so a good ratio is 2:1 eg: 1000mg of calcium to 500mg of magnesium. An easy home test for hypocalcemia is called the chvostek sign. When the facial nerve is tapped at the angle of the jaw, you will typically see a twitch of the nose or lips >>>

6)   Here's something you may or may not know, Vitamin D is in the blue light spectrum of sunlight, and you can buy a special blue light for your house. This way you won't get burnt and will take in vitamin D in the comfort of your own home.
Try asking in a good health shop where you get one from. I thing they are about $60 though. - Andyboy

7)   Regular vitamin D/D2 is completely useless.
Vitamin D3 is the one you want to take. No studies have established an actual upper limit/toxic dose but it's guessed to be around 50,000iu a day for several months. No one does this in reality.
Vitamin D3 is actually a hormone.
You need to expose at least half your body to the sun for at least 30 minutes to manufacture about 20,000iu of D3.
You would be better off seeing a Naturopath or Homeopath than a regular MD. They get no training in nutrition, and what they know about vitamin deficiencies is very basic old information. They are trained to prescribe drugs. This is why most of them are still prescribing useless D2.
Mercola.com has a wealth of information on vitamin D testing, research studies, etc.
The current recommendation by natural health experts is 5 to 10,000iu of D3 daily as a maintenance dose in winter when people who live north of Atlanta can't manufacture their own D3 from sun exposure because the sun's rays are too weak to be of any benefit. - thenoseknows

8)   The best way to raise your vitamin D levels is by soaking up the sun as you are doing. I would stop taking the vegetarian vitamin D since that is D2. You want D3 which is natural and by taking D2 you are giving yourself a false sense of security. Your blood levels may rise, but it is the D3 that is the key to regaining your health. [1]

"Vitamin D is in a class by itself. Its metabolic product, calcitriol, is actually a secosteroid hormone that is the key that unlocks binding sites on the human genome. The human genome contains more than 2,700 binding sites for calcitriol; those binding sites are near genes involved in virtually every known major disease of humans." [2]

So what would be the best strategy to help raise your vitamin D levels? I would continue to get as much sun as possible and on days when it is not sunny you can use a tanning bed to help. It is important to remember that depending on where you are getting sun might not be enough. You get exposed to more UV-B rays the closer you are to the equator. So you might want to consider taking supplemental vitamin D3 temporarily until you get your blood levels up to optimal levels ( greater than 50 nmol/L.) [3]

I would also recommend that you consider taking additional supplements like a multi-vitamin and a magnesium supplement. I would avoid sources of D2 as it is possible that it may hinder your efforts of achieving a healthy vitamin D level. - Chicago Mike

5)   Overprescription of antibiotics has lead to the development of this type of problem. It makes sense that you need to take a substantial amount of probiotics -- 80% of your immune system is in your gut. The optimum dose for people who are just trying to recover their good gut flora from antibiotic use is 15 billion live cells per day. In your case it would make good sense to more than double that. Vitamin D3 is also an immune system booster. The optimum dose for the average is 5 to 10,000 iu a day. So in your case you could more than double that as well.

Since MRSA has made a nice home in you, the ideal treatment is to make yourself an inhospitable environment.

Properly prepared antimicrobial garlic products in powder and liquid form have been scientifically proven to kill MRSA in human clinical studies. And unlike antibiotic drugs that weaken your immune system, garlic actually boosts your immune system, providing powerful added benefits over the antibiotic drugs.

In 2008, Dr. Ron Cutler and the University of East London (UEL) released the results from a human clinical study performed on 52 patients with hospital acquired MRSA (or HA-MRSA). All 52 patients were treated with a form of stabilized allicin and recovered fully from their MRSA infections. Many of the wounds healed in just 4 to 12 weeks and many of the patients had previously been treated with multiple antibiotics with no improvement.

Another recent study performed by Chungshan Medical University Hospital showed that other compounds in garlic, not just allicin, have powerful natural antibiotic effects. In the study, mice were infected with the bacteria from actual human MRSA patients. The study found that garlic extract, diallyl sulphide and diallyl disulphide provided strong protective functions against MRSA by boosting the immune system. - thenoseknows

Does chiropractic care work?...  I've been dealing with knee pain issues for 6 months now with little-no improvement using conventional medicine (rest, physical therapy, ice, NSAIDS). The ortho said surgery is an option, but not a good one, so I'm ready to try alternative methods. I'm skeptical a chiropractor can help but would love to have some testimonials.

1)   There is no substantiated evidence to suggest that chiropractic works for anything other than temporary relief of lower back pain. - Gary Y

2)   I asked a similar question earlier today. It seems like there is a lot of debate over whether the treatment is helpful, with some saying it is. Others believe that it is not and that chiropractors mainly get into that profession as an excuse to fondle the patients butt. So it really is a mixed opinion. It may vary from chiropractor to chiropractor. Maybe go have one appointment but look at their behavior towards your butt in a skeptical manner. - Ward

is pot supposed to hurt your lungs?...  I mean like when you inhale it, im not talking about from long term use, i notice when i inhale my lungs hurt for a few seconds and i cough like crazy, is this normal? i also have asthma. Also is it ok to smoke everyday? or would that be too much?

Answers
1)   No, don't smoke, you have Asthma, dummy. Eat it instead, lol. - Florida Kayak Girl

2)   While pot is not physically addictive, it is mentally addictive. I would suggest you limit yourself to maybe once a week to once every two weeks. Not only that but if you live in america it is illegal, and you DO NOT want to get in trouble with it. It would affect your entire life. Be careful, and don't be around stupid pot heads that take unneeded risks. Like driving around with it. Buying large quantitys of it. Or like to tell everyone and invite strangers around to smoke. You never know who is who these days. Pot is relatively harmless, much less harmful than drinking, and should be legal. But its not.

Now to the coughing, yep normal. And the grade of pot you smoke is either going to make that better or worse. If its ditch weed (meaning its really cheap) its going to be harsh and nasty. Not only that b
ut smoking the cheapest may have mold in it or spider mites. You get what you pay for. What would lessen the coughing is the manner in which you smoke it. If its all you can get my advice is either don't buy it or to smoke it out of either a water bong or a vaporizor. That will make it easier to inhale and it won't make you cough up a lung. Plus if its that bad the water acts as a filter and the vaporizer you don't actually inhale smoke you inhale the fog from the burst thc glands. - waterlilyccr

3)   Well since you are burning a dry plant which produces carbon dioxide it is a little bad, but so is sitting by a campfire. Coughing is normal, especially if you are a beginner. I have a friend who has a serious asthma problem, and he said it actually helps him. It helped me breath better. I mean i wouldn't do it everyday, but every other day, in my opinion would be better. Also to help not cough try not to swallow the smoke, and take a nice slow hit, don't just suck on it as hard. - Northernlights

4)   the part of it that burns your lungs is the good part, that's the signal for this hit is a good one. idk about the asthma though, you might wanna consult your doctor. lol but for the love of god, make something up don't saying you're smoking reefer. - greenman

What is your opinion on naturopathy?

Question 1
What is your opinion on naturopathy?...  What is your opinion of naturopathy?

I have been sick for about 3 months, had a slew of medical tests, and have been on about 15 different prescriptions – all with no answers.

I am considering turning to natural medicine.
There is a clinic near my house, but before I take the leap, I was wondering... What is your experience or opinion with/on natural medicine?

I have shortness of breath, I cannot take a deep (or fully satisfying) breath, I try to yawn but can never complete the yawn, my resting heart rate is always higher than it should be, I get lightheaded often, I feel a little disoriented occasionally, I wake up a lot while I sleep, I burp a lot, I was also diagnosed with Acid Reflux (but I never have heart burn)

I think I may have a hiatal hurnea?

I was tested for asthma, negative
vocal chord dysfunction, negative
cystic fibrosis, negative
had a chest x-ray, everything was fine

a doctor found a heart murmur just this past Wednesday, and I had an echocardiogram on Thursday, but have yet to get the results
Supposedly, I have a Mitral Valve Prolapse.

So tell me about your experiences. possible success stories with naturopathy.

Answers
1)   I just read about a brand new study today that came back with results proving that Echinaecia has barely any effect on the common cold at all. Shortening it's duration and severity only slightly. The amount was so small that it could be accounted for by chance. I.E. Echinaecea does not work. There is a reason naturopathy isn't medically proven. It doesn't work. (generally speaking, although some of it probably does because of pure chance and also people's observations over the centuries). Nothing can compare with the scientific method. Science doesn't know everything yet, far be it from me to claim it doesn't make mistakes and have very incomplete knowledge etc. But, that's better than the supersitious folklore of naturopathy. I'm not very against naturopathy if you have a lot of money, b/c it probably can't hurt, or can't hurt much. But, for most of us with limited funds, I decry it as a waste of money. Hope the the doctors are able to fix your body, have a good one :) - Joss Whedon is the MAN!!!

2)   The biggest problem with naturopathy is a semantic one.
Naturopaths are people who practice "natural" therapies.
"Natural" Therapies, sound good and make people want to use them and feel good about themselves for doing so.
However, what on earth are natural therapies? Turns out there isn't a clear technical definition of it.

The second problem comes from what the liscencing of the profession. Some states are set up so that naturopaths have schooling requirements to practice, and an accredidation means something in that state (ie. oregon, arizona, california), others however don't.
In the states that do, someone has to go through a fairly well done medical school, and really knows what they are doing, and a praticing "N.D." there would be someone excellent to see.
In states that don't, you can pay a couple hundred dolars, and get a diploma sent to you in the mail (strangely enough, the companies that make these are actually the principle opponents of naturopaths getting liscenced in a state, more so than the AMA). These sorts of naturopaths don't really know what they are doing, and hence can "randomly hurt people" or "not do anything that matters." On good ole quackwatch, a laundry list of naturopath victims was published (where people did stupid things like put something on a patients face that burned it off), and in every case the naturopath wasn't someone who had gone to school, and just a mail in diploma person.
I know a few natural healers that are self taught, and get good results using the "fake" ND certification who have helped a lot of people, but by and large the ND's that don't actually go to medical school should be avoided and viewed as a seperate profession.

So skipping the cons, for pros
*A lot of doctors I've met are grumpy pissed off unfriendly people who somewhat hate their life/job/themselves. However, I have never met an unhappy naturopath. It's the only medical profession where the doctors (from a patient or colleague viewpoint) are always pleasant to be around.
*Naturopaths tend to never get nasty side effects in their patients (whereas allopaths often do). This is because naturopath medicines are more "natural" which means they are lighter and less potentially damaging to the body.
*Naturopaths tend to know a lot more about the human body on a lot of different levels than most doctors.
*Some of the treatments and results they get are really cool
*The practice is being more and more popular (since naturopaths tend to be more liked by patients, and people are getting fed up with allopathys' short falls).

I'm still not sure if I want to go to medical school (so much work :|), but if I did, I would go to a naturopath college. - bikash

3)   My favourite type of medicine. Try digestive enzymes for acid reflux first to see if it is just a lack of enzymes in the diet. I use Sandra Cabot's digestive enzymes...she is a famous naturopath here in Australia. To read about enzymes for acid reflux >>>>http://www.natural-indigestion-relief.com/acid-reflux-remedies-digestive-enzymes.html

Magnesium deficiency is linked to many heart issues including mitral valve prolapse. When the body is deficient in magnesium, shortness of breath is also experienced. Magnesium and calcium work together and the best ratio found is 2:1 eg: 1000mg of calcium to 500mg of magnesium. You can see the studies about Mitral Valve Prolapse and magnesium deficiency on this link>>>http://www.ctds.info/mvp1.html#mitral_magnesium

Vitamins that cause shortness of breath>>>

4)   Naturopathy is alternative medicine. Alternative medicine is only alternative because it hasn't been proved to work, or it has been proved not to work. It is in total conflict with evidence based medicine and is often described as pseudoscience and quackery. The majority of it's treatments are placebos, helped by lengthy and caring consultations; so if you think that may help, go for it.

But stay skeptical and ask for evidence of efficacy and safety - especially if you get offered herbal drugs. And if they offer homeopathy - RUN. The alternative medicine industry is riddled with scams and fraud - homeopathy is the ultimate.

Really, if proper doctors haven't found anything wrong with you, no alternative medicine practitioner will. Though they may tell you otherwise.

5)   Daniel?.....Uh I rather think that you're gonna have more waiting to do,..I don't know where you live but I guarantee you that it has alot to do with your treatment. Your age is also a factor here, I've myself, just in the past 5 years had to learn about "the system" from age 47 to now at age 52" in so much that "waiting is all the rage"......you damn near have to die before anyone will tell you what is wrong and even then it's entirely possible that you'll get a wrong diagnosis. So unless you're a Native American who's related to a Shaman, you're not gonna get close to "Naturopathy" that's wholesome and real......."Naturopathy" isn't an understood science, in fact it isn't a science at all, it's a semi-spiritual,mis-interpreted,whitewashed,guruish,nonsensical, tub of nothing.....I have only seen one instance of Naturopathy in the native American population that was "Real" and made sense and it didn't relate to medicine except for diabetes and that drug only came from the "Juniper tree"....and only one instance from which a drug came from a tree recently that related to cancer " Taxol" which comes from the bark of a conifer from America......newly controled. Naturopathy isn't anything practiced by anyoine who "actually knows" anything about it unless you trust a chiropractor, a hands on healor like "Rieki" or a person who understands acctupressure or puncture.....that's about as close as you can get......or just begin eating a gluten free diet....I can tell you that "Diabetes" type 2...can seemingly come and go in people between the ages of 35 and 55....it sounds wierd I know.....but it happens.......I moved to Oregon from Texas 6 years ago this Feb....in November after I moved here, I had a severe episode, passed out and injurred myself badly, I was hauled to the hospital and was put in a room for 5 days and when I came to, I was told I had a heart attack,,,, then the next day, I was told I had a stroke, the day after that I was told it wasn't either of those, it was a siezure of some kind....then I was told I had "Epilepsy".....for the next 4 and a half years I had 7 more sever siezures that required hospitalization and about 200 smaller siezures and then last october I had one really bad siezure and was choppered to Portland Oregon where I was in the hospital for a week at a "Learning hospital" called OSHU.....supposedly one of the best hospitals in the country for this type of thing.......they found out that my doctors had been over medicating me for 4 and a half years.....OMG...I wanted to sue them but they made me sign a waiver. So, now my doctors understand what is going on(supposedly) and they give me my meds. one of my main problems is "severe insomnia".....stopping breathing in my sleep which makes me wake up in the middle of the night....so I have what is known as "sleep anxiety" and I take a dose of xanax for it and I sleep better at night now.........So, waiting has been a learning curve for me....the heart problem?....well, my doctor swears I still have one.....I have Diabetes too, Epilepsy for sure, Dr.Pepper habit, smoker,...I'll die one day for certain but I will never resort to Naturopathy. I live damn near in the middle of the forrest, it snows, it gets hot, it changes from day to day and hour to hour and a person can get lost in minutes,.....you could live off the land if you had to but you'd most likely die if you did because you wouldn't know what to eat and what was poisonous.....things look alot alike here...nature and all it's "pathy"....is really nonsense even if people resort to it and I've seen several examples right here in this little town. It can get serious. So, all the people who tought things like Echinacea and natural healing, herbs ( I've been guilty myself ) are fools. Medicine, when practiced right and recieved well will always work well......you just have to go to the lengths and do the waiting....I'm sorry for your situation man, you may have to do some searching but if it works, do the searching.....
Nathan. - theoregonartist

6)   Your answer won't come from someone who hasn't been to medical school and is just guessing, there's plenty of crackpots like that (take a look at RA's post to see that).

If there's an answer to your problem then it'll come from educated professionals with multi-million dollar diagnostics at their disposal.

It can be tempting to try any number of whacko treatments out there, but stick to advanced medicine, not outdated myths and old wive's tales. - dave

7)   A doctor will always have the courage to tell you that there's nothing wrong with you. He (or she) does this because he/she has your best interests at heart and it is against your interests to keep looking for and paying for something that is not there. You will get mad at the doctor and accuse him of not listening but the truth is, he did listen and he did do his best to find out what's bothering you and in the end, he found nothing is really wrong with you.

Your symptoms are vague and very very nonspecific and I fully agree with the tests that were done on you. However, since nothing was found, it's probably that. Nothing. You're as healthy as an ox but you worry too much over things that others would not give a second thought.

An alt med practitioner on the other hand will tell you anything to keep you happy and to keep you coming back. I bet that somehow, a naturopath will find something wrong and make you buy all sorts of herbs and supplements. Then you'll take them and then the placebo effect will kick in and you'll feel better because you felt like you did something even though it didn't really matter if you did or didn't.

There's nothing wrong with you but wait for the ECG results. Don't waste your money on naturopaths. - angrydoc

8)   It really sounds like your problem is a psychological one, perhaps you should be speaking of some sort of therapist. - Flizbap 2.0

9)   People like yourself would not be looking for other medical modalities if they were happy with the status quo of conventional medicine. It's not health care but rather managed disease care. Because conventional medicine fails to address the cause of health problems and merely treats symptoms, it's bound to fail.
Natural health professions such as Naturopathy study the causes and triggers of health problems and address those instead of just trying to suppress symptoms. In jurisdictions where Naturopathy is a regulated health profession only practitioners who have graduated from a comprehensive educational program and are registered with their respective governing body are legally able to use the designation "Naturopath". Same for Homeopath, Osteopath, Chiropractor, Dental Hygeinist, Registered Nurse, Physiotherapist, Registered Massage Therapist, MD, Dentist, etc.
Where professions are "unregulated" there are Professional Associations that maintain a register of members who are required to meet educational and professional standards that reflect the highest goals of that profession and it's self regulating. (eg. the Professional Association of Diving Instructors PADI is not government regulated, and you don't hear about Scuba divers dropping like flies from incompetent diving instructors killing off their students.)
Natural health practitioners usually go that route because they initially started off as satisfied customers. They were in the same boat as you at one point.
Bottom line is make sure that the practitioner you choose is registered with their respective regulatory body, whether it's a college or professional association.
Hawthorne is an herb that's used in Naturopathy and Homeopathy to regulate heartbeat. It's usually taken as a tincture. Acid reflux can be caused by not having enough stomach acid (not too little as conventional medicine would like you to believe). A Naturopath will be able to determine whether you need betaine hcl or digestive enzymes to clear up your problem. An MD would prescribe acid reducers which will just make you worse in the long run and you'll never be able to ditch the drugs.
Naturopathy is about restoring your health in a balanced way. It's not just a bandaid treatment for your symptoms. - thenoseknows

Question 2
Why would "Big Pharma" suppress alternative medicine if it worked?...  As an example, the profit margin on homeopathy is around 10000% (10c to mix water, sugar, and less than 1 molecule of Arnica, sells for $10). While not as extreme as homeopathy, incredible profit margins also exist on detox drinks, informational products, colloidal silver, "healing magnets" and other alternative remedies.
If alternative medicine worked, why would pharmaceutical giants want to suppress it when they could simply use their economies of scale to corner the market instead of spending billions on research?

Answers
1)   To quote a famous musician/comedian

Alternative medicine is medicine that is not proven to work, or proven not to work, Do you know what they call Alternative medicine that works?.......Medicine.

Also, they suppress it so they can sell more of the drug that they have licenced.

Besides, Can you have less than one molecule of Arnica? doesn't that make it something else?

I always thought that Homeopathy was the study of hiphop artists! - The Drunken Fool

2)   Most folks do not do their homework where this is concerned. You cannot put a patent on anything that is found in nature and is in original form. ( Think regualr corn seed vs. Monsanto genetically modified seeds) It needs to be changed in order to get it patented. It is all aboout the money.... always has been, always will be. Today's doctors are trained under the shadow of the big corporations... big pharma and big insurance. Real healing is secondary to sustained healing. Sustained healing is to string along a person with drugs, rather than look for what is wrong and fix it. There are many alternative therapies that work well, but people take drugs with side affects instead. To understand, one must do their own research. As you stated, there are many Alternative therapies out there that are out for profit as well. Sifting through all the hype to find the truth is tiring, but worth it when you find what r-e-a-l-l-y works. - shortstuff

3)   Because they can't patent natural substances.
They don't spend billions on research. Watch CBC Marketplace's exposure of drug company false claims. They spend more on marketing and advertising. The research money comes from you and me in the form of donations. The drug companies have a nice racket going.
A vial of Homeopathic Arnica, enough to treat a whole city, costs five to ten dollars. Where do you get your "facts"?
For the last 3 years in Cuba they've been able to use Homeopathic prevention for an annual Leptospirosis epidemic at one tenth of the cost of conventional vaccines. It's the same lab that produced both products. The vaccine cost almost $2 million. The Homeopathic prophylaxis cost $200,000.
Big Pharma is fighting it's competition. What's so hard to understand about that? - thenoseknows

4)   When alternative medicine works, it stops being alternative medicine and becomes medicine.

Ever popped an aspirin? That was sourced from willow bark.

Hey, ever seen a stroke patient take coumadin? Coumarin is from plants, and that's how we found out about coumadin and medications like it.

And, the latest example of alternative medicine becoming medicine is lovaza. Lovaza is prescription guaranteed-quality fish oil. Nothing else, just fish oil. It's prescribed for people with high cholesterol.

When doctors and pharmaceutical companies SEE therapeutic effects in substances not yet believed to have medical applications, you can bet they jump right on them and turn them into a profitable pill.

If there were any therapeutic benefits to homeopathic remedies, they wouldn't be alternative medicine, and would become mainstream medicine being sold behind a pharmacy counter, made from regulated ingredients.

I wish people who were anti-"pharma" could realize that pharmaceutical companies aren't going to make a buck if you die from untreated illness by them selling you homeopathic 'remedies', so that's why they sell treatments that they know work: because doctors will keep prescribing and patients will keep buying because people actually get well when they take those real medications. - Z

5)   It's called moola, money, profit, the green stuff, $$$$ :) Top 10 drug companies account for more than 50% of the fortune 500 profits and they want to stay that way. - ƦєdAиgєℓ

6)   Silly old thenoseknowsnothing! 'They can't patent natural substances' indeed!

In fact it's common for synthetic derivatives to be made that are an improvement on the original, and it's also common to get patents on the methods of isolating or administering the substance.

So even if a 'Big Pharma' couldn't make money directly from a natural substance, if that natural substance were shown to be effective they could make plenty of money and get plenty kudos from developing a safer, more effective derivative. The chemotherapy drug Taxol is derived from yew, for example.

If any homeopathic or other 'alternative' remedy had proved effective, pharmaceutical companies would be all over it like a rash; they're after profits, after all.

Yes, nosey - I'm sure a vial of homeopathic whatever costs next to nothing; but that's not the cost passed on to the consumer, now is it? Take a look at the prices on the homeopathic website Rhianna linked you to the other day - no cities being treated for a mere $5 -10 there, I think you'll agree. The OP's estimate of homeopathic profit margins looks like something of an underestimate now that you've given us that information... - lo_mcg

7)   History is full of examples of "absurd ideas" becoming mainstream after provision of data demonstrating them to be factual. But there will still be some alternative ideas that fail under test conditions. Big Pharma has really nothing to do with the research on those ideas, as it will not result in profit. Research is carried out by people who want to know if the alternative ideas really have any merits at all - despite their biological implausibility. And it is often (mostly?) funded by the public. There is a lot of "non-Big Pharma" research on homeopathy etc. showing conclusively that it performs no better than placebo.

Edit:
Rhianna is right, and Nosey herself gave another example of a patented homeopathic remedy the other day: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=An0sOTag_lEWvnqXMMQvJ7Mb53NG;_ylv=3?qid=20101215021024AAJ6qCJ - JLI

8)   Exactly,

And Nosey is just wrong.

You can patent natural products- even homeopathy...if it worked. We went through this with you very recently.

"For the last 3 years in Cuba they've been able to use Homeopathic prevention for an annual Leptospirosis epidemic at one tenth of the cost of conventional vaccines. It's the same lab that produced both products. The vaccine cost almost $2 million. The Homeopathic prophylaxis cost $200,000."

Er...no. Orac covered this recently: http://scienceblogs.com/insolence/2010/11/homeopathy_in_cuba.php

Fail. - Rhianna does Medicine Year 1

9)   You can't patent nature. Pharma are just looking after their interests and discrediting alternative medicine.

Edit: Oh Rhianna is back. Whats the bet her "alter ego" with a beak will reappear to?

I saw Charley at this lunar eclipse watching thing last night Rhianna. He still hasn't worked out who I am. Shall I put him out of his misery? - Sally

6)   Cholesterol is produced by the liver in response to something, often taking in too much calcium, excessive alcohol consumption, taking prescription drugs, a diet too high in processed foods. If you address the cause the problem will reverse. Losing weight does the trick for lots of people (same for high blood pressure).

Question 5
where to buy homeopathic medicine in washington state?...  hi i need to find some place or a web page where i can found homeopathic medicine in drops not in globules because i need them in liquid.thanks for your help

Answers
1)   Homeopathic 'medicine' is water, nothing else.

Try any store for cheap bottled water by the gallon. - dave

2)   Your tap has homeopathic medicine for almost no money at all! Just open up the tap, pour a glass and give it a few shakes and taps, drink it, and see if you feel better.

If you don't, congratulations, homeopathy doesn't work for you because it doesn't work for anyone except via placebo effect. You can then proceed to see a real doctor to treat your condition. - Z

3)   Try in "Whole Foods". In New York we get there. By the way why do you need specifically in liquid? Yes it will be more in quantity than in globules but be sure to take only one drop a dose and not more. It goes without saying that it should be in potency and not as mother tincture. - gamya

4)   ABC Homeopathy is one of the most frequently used websites. You can make your own medicinal solutions in spring water bottles: pour out all but 4oz, put in one pellet without touching it, let it dissolve for about 10 minutes, then take 1 tsp.
Here's a great informational website on methodology from one of the world's best Homeopathic doctors:
