What laws do you have against alternative medicine lies?

Question 1
What laws do you have against alternative medicine lies?...  What kind of laws do you have in your country to prevent scammers from lying and making false claims about their products?
In the UK we have the Advertising Standards Authority who recently banned an advert for claiming:

""Revitalise will halt and actually reverse the effects of arthritis! There is currently no medical cure for arthritis and many of the treatments available from your doctor ... are themselves painful or have unpleasant side effects.

"Revitalise is available without prescription, has no side effects and is all natural, so will not interfere with any medication you are currently taking.""

Lies such as "reverse the effects of arthritis" and "all natural, so will not interfere with any medication" are easily believed by the less well educated and/or more gullible sectors of society, so the advert was banned to protect these people from being exploited.

Do you have similar laws in your country? If not, are vulnerable people there protected from these sorts of nefarious charlatans in any other way?

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/21/20101208/thl-arthritis-advert-was-misleading-d831572.html
Nosey, are you worried that your habitual lying could be legislated against also?
GN: Thanks for your input. Here's an example that (contrary to your belief) includes lots of people recommending cures for the common cold: http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AqzCF4nAms0mhpu43FiGr.ogBgx.;_ylv=3?qid=20101205163654AADQ15W If you hang around long enough you'll find plenty of people who will claim that alt med cures cancer and AIDS as well. If we appear a little curt at times, I'm sure you'll be able to now appreciate why.

1)   Alternative medicine is incredibly useless. - Maxwell Cui

2)   Another logical fallacy of begging the question: "Alternative medicine lies"?
Use of emotive language and value judgments: "nefarious charlatans"? Rather melodramatic don't you think?
There are also nice laws against libel and slander.

Canada has legislation that targets false and misleading advertising for products, but it's another story when governments are lobbied to enact legislation that protects a trade or organization like the medical industry -- like last year's phoney swine flu pandemic where patients had to sign waivers making it impossible for them to sue the vaccine manufacturers for adverse effects. Many people ended up paralysed and had no legal recourse. So if you weigh a questionnable claim from some distributor of a relatively harmless arthritis product that at worst can't do much against permanent paralysis, which is more significant?

Many Canadian provinces also have regulatory bodies under a Health Professions Act like the College of Physicans and Surgeons, Naturopaths, Homeopaths, Osteopaths, Chiropractors, Nurses, Dental Hygeinists, etc. and professional associations that set out the minimum educational standards for their members.

Seems some people just can't get over the fact that natural/holistic medicine is becoming more popular than mainstream and that "alternative" is a misnomer concocted by the drug company propaganda machine.

Recently the FDA started threatening cherry growers for having the audacity to claim that cherries are good for you and had links to scientific studies. The cherry growers sued the FDA and won. The judge considered the FDA to be morons. - thenoseknows

3)   It would be nice if they made any supplement manufacturer have to proove their claims, such as "contains no chemicals" water is a damn chemical for goodness sake.

It would be nice if they also banned the term "proprietary blend" so that they would have to show just how 99% of their supplement is actually rice flour. - Flizbap 2.0

4)   Hey Dave, Check out the world news and see what they have to say about the "BIG PHARMA" They're being sued again for over charging medicare and medicaid and giving the difference to the doctors. Now do you think people will believe anything you say on here. I think not. Open your eyes. There's a big world out there and you're missing it. HA! - Know the Cause

5)   In Australia, your example would breach the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) Regulatory Guidelines For Complimentary Medicines, but they can often be a toothless tiger.

There are other avenues - the ACCC (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission), the various states all have government departments where consumer complaints can be made, we have a good federal government site http://www.scamwatch.gov.au, and there are also independent health watchdogs.

And then there is the media, blogs, general skeptical activism which is very proactive here. - Gary Y

6)   Pretty weak ones in the US, basically the FDA(our regulatory body for medical treatments) only has authority over altmed if they make specific health claims like "this cures..." most alt med products sold here are specifically advertised to skirt around the FDA's jurisdiction. - evirustheslaye

7)   Apparently in the US Quackapractors can say anything they want. Damn the insulin, get your diabetes cured here....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35ExFWcPqO8 Chiropractic helps your brain "talk" to your pancreas????? - massage therapist

8)   All that rambling was just YOUR OPINION. NOT FACTUAL. - healthminded

9)   The biggest "law" in our favor is "natural selection".....eventually if enough idiots shun modern medicine in favor of charlatanism and quackery, they will hopefully die off and not pass their defective genes on to the next generation.

Guardian: "...no practitioner worth their salt would say that they could 'cure' someone...."

Oh, but folks here all the time (Know the Cause to name just ONE) claim to know the CURES for lots of things - diabetes just to name one thing. Kevin Trudeau has the infomercial and book "Miracle Cures THEY Don't Want You to Know About" or something like that......you mean to tell me that you folks DON'T know all of the cures??????? - Joe

10)   i have to agree with 'thenosek' about the reaction of conventional medicine and the pharmaceutical industry regarding their actions when holistic medicine, whether herbs or treatment, is seen as being helpful to a medical condition. they start a witch hunt and try to denigrate the whole spectrum of complementary/alternative medicine.
i agree with you Dave that many overthecounter so called remedies do not work, this is probably because they are not tailored to the individual, which is what a professionally qualified alt.med.practitioner would do. health food stores selling proprietary brands know their product knowledge but are not qualified to diagnose.
professional alt.med practitioners are often highly qualified and belong to bona fide organisations that monitor training and practice.....ant that's in the UK.
sounds like you'veve been mislead by someone....no practitioner worth their salt would say that they could 'cure' someone....alleviate symptoms perhaps. it tends to be some individuals in conventional medicine that use that term, but some of them are good.
.....and in anticipation of the comments this opion will get, it should never be a case of them and us in different branches of medicine, it should be working together for the benefit of the patient. - guardian N

Question 2
Has anyone watched the news latley about the "Big Pharma"?...  I was watching world news and they said that the "Big Pharma" has been over charging Medicaid and medicare and giving the difference to the doctors. And now they are being sued for 300 million dollars. WTF! Now do you people really think that they are in it for our health are our money? Goes to show what I've been saying to these skeptics all along. And they think we stupid. HA! Open your mind skeptics and you will see the big picture. And you will know the cause.

Answers
1)   Where have you been?? This is not new.... there are so many things going on that if people would just do a bit of research for themselves instead of being soaked in self indulgence they would see that there are many things like this!! Drug companies are not int the business of keeping you well... they are in the business of making money. Seed companies that manufacture genetically modified seeds are not in the business of keeping you healthy... they are in the business to make money. Banks are not in the business to assist you financially.... they are in the business to make money. Follow the money trail.... always follow the money trail... it is there that you will find the truth... - shortstuff

2)   I'm not aware what story you are referring to. Can you provide a link?

However, from what you've said; something underhanded/illegal/fraudulent MAY have been going on...it's been found out and action is being taken. Your point?

Are you suggesting that this means everything "big pharma" does is wrong, all Doctors are corrupt and therefore conventional medicine is bad? If so, automatic fail.

"Now do you people really think that they are in it for our health are our money?"

Do Alt.med practitioners aka snake oil salesmen, provide their services free of charge? Alt.med is a multi billion dollar industry- most of it unregulated.
It isn't wrong that someone stands to make money from something. This does not mean it is bad.

We keep pointing out the fallacies in your arguments and you just keep hitting us back with the same illogical questions. Get a grip please, KTC.

@ Nosey: The point is, one possible case of fraud, does not mean all
Pharmaceutical drugs are bad and "don't save lives." This is simply non sequiter.

Conventional medicine does manage many chronic diseases and illnesses. Ex. Many asthmatics and diabetics wouldn't be alive today if it weren't for conventional drugs. Show me evidence that alt.med has EVER altered the course of type 1 or 2 diabetes or asthma? FYI diet and lifestyle advice ISN'T alternative.

"Tim Bolen's site Quackpotwatch exposes the skeppies for what they really are"

And what's that then, Nosey? By definition, skeptics are people who require evidence before they accept a claim that something works or exists. The moment you start speculating about what else it means and what else we are, is the moment you fail your argument.

"...some lowlife media types hired by the drug companies tried to pull a smoke and mirrors job about "alternative medicine" "

Evidence please.

"Skeppies aren't interested in facts, just their own brand of disinformation."

Oh the irony. Actually we are the only ones interested in facts. Its your ilk who ignores the facts. The truth is inconvenient to those with a hidden agenda...

Edit: So once again, KTC is misrepresenting the facts of the case? - Rhianna does Medicine Year 1

3)   Well that convinces me. Everyone should go off their life supporting medication and switch to acupuncture and crystals immediately. - Gary Y

4)   This is the REAL health care fraud, or should I say sick care fraud.
Pharmaceutical drugs don't save lives. Apart from emergency interventions, alll drugs do is create more chronic illness in people who are already sick.
Tim Bolen's site Quackpotwatch exposes the skeppies for what they really are and how some lowlife media types hired by the drug companies tried to pull a smoke and mirrors job about "alternative medicine" being the culprit in health fraud instead.
Skeppies aren't interested in facts, just their own brand of disinformation. - thenoseknows

5)   Personally I'm happy to have my health care provided by a company that operates at a profit.

Puma does not care about my feet. They just make great boots so that I'll buy them and not a rubbish pair.

Alpha Romeo doesn't care about how fast I get somewhere they just make a great car for the money that brings them (if only any of the electrics worked for more than two minutes).

All the best things we have are made by corporations including i'm sure, the computer you are using today. Are you worried that BIG PC is raising prices to make a profit.

Clearly if they have been breaking the law then they need to brought into line. But you feel that they should make no money whatsoever. you're a little boy who doesn't understand how the big boy world works.
Big Pharma, as you call it MAKES MONEY. If you took them away we wouldn't suddenly start getting free health care. They would just leave a gap.

Look, I'm happy to split the world in two. One half with no Alt Med and one half with only Alt Med. I know where i'd go and I'd be happy to let you go to the other. but leave your children here, They deserve actual medicine.

@ JLI --- BAM!! great point.

All you're doing is showing that when Pharma steps out of line they are punished for it OWN GOAL!!! - Angelhil

6)   So you are saying that it is big news that "Big Pharma" can't get away with foul play? Please pay attention to who expose and deal with them. And remember also that foul play by "Big Pharma" has been exposed and handled by the conventional system before.

EDIT:
Thank you Angelhil. One could only wish, that the altie-system would be equally open to deal with serious misconduct within their own ranks. - JLI

7)   KTC likes to distort things....it was the HOSPITALS that received the preferred pricing....not "the doctors"....huge difference......the HOSPITAL is operated by BUSINESSPERSONS......

Oh, BTW - you never have revealed what the CURE for diabetes is.....or MS.......just to name two of the things that you have claimed knowledge of....How about sharing???

Nosey the blocker says: "Skeppies aren't interested in facts, just their own brand of disinformation."

Give us some FACTS and then we might be interested. Continue with the anecdotal bullcrap and we'll continue to call you on it.

Flizbap - why do you think that a "large segment" of us are jerks? Did you fail to get accepted to medical school or something? Or is it just an extrapolation from the fact that a "large segment" of the population in general are jerks, so it must follow that the same applies to doctors (who are, after all, just people)??? - Joe

8)   Hospitals boards of directors are greedy?

*GASP!*

I had no idea!

None of this changes the fact that doctors practice scientifically proven medicine; the fact that a large segment of them are jerks has NO BEARING ON THEIR ABILITIES. - Flizbap 2.0

Question 3
Why is it so hard to find an effective treatment for obesity?...

Answers
1)   Because you are too fat and lazy to find one, you fat fuck. - Bill Davidson

2)   The treatment is eating less and moving more.

Whether you can get the patient to swallow the bitter pill of reality is another question..... - dave

3)   Actually it's not. Dietary changes and exercise work just as well as ever. We know that high fructose corn syrup, msg and a host of other additives and ingredients in processed foods are the biggest culprits. Lifestyle is the biggest cause. Prevention is the biggest cure. - thenoseknows

4)   That's actually very simple to do. Intake only enough calories that you need for the lifestyle that you live. Pick up a hobby that is active. Hiking through parks, bike riding, get a dog and jog with him/her. - Devon

5)   Humans are genetically constructed for food shortages, hence we tend to seek out foods with high food value (ie calorie-intense) as a preference over low energy foods as a means of survival. Social and economic forces have contributed to creating an environment and a lifestyle where fewer calories are burned. Obesity isn't an illness that needs treating, it's just the way we are.

You might try the GI way of eating if you're trying to control your weight. It looks at ways to mkae the body feel fuller longer by eating foods which release energy more slowly. - Sophie

6)   Simply because patients don't like being told to put their fork down, and get up off the couch and exercise, which is of course, the best treatment and prevention.

There are some people (probably those who are morbidly obese) who may have an actual psychological "addiction" to food. This isn't very well recognized in medicine and evidence for it is lacking. CBT, may be of benefit here. However, evidence is lacking.

Bar hormone, rare metabolic and thyroid problems; the problem is a case of eating too much and not doing enough. - Rhianna does Medicine Year 1

7)   Its not hard to find the treatment but its hard to follow the treatment.

Here are some home remedies for obesity:
•Drink warm water after every meal. This helps to reduce weight .

•Bitter guard juice helps in losing weight.

•Add 1teaspoon of honey and 2teaspoon of lime juice to warm water and drink. This helps in reducing fat. - Merlin Joe

Question 4
waht relieves a sore throat?...  I am in school and my chest and throat hurts. Wat can I do to stop the pain? :(

Answers
1)   Gargling salt water.

It works for me every time, giving instant relief from a sore throat. I think it's because the salt water kills bacteria in the mouth and throat.

Ask the school nurse for some salt water, or grab some salt packets and water from the cafeteria and make it yourself.

Keep in mind it doesn't taste good. Drink something else afterwards to get the taste out of you mouth. - G Man

2)   take a tea with some ginger into it or put some salt into tea - sunil k

3)   When you get home drink some apple cider vinegar with honey and cayenne pepper in it.

The cayenne and honey will help with the pain and the apple cider vinegar will help with the healing.

Typically you can mix equal amounts of the apple cider vinegar (NOT white vinegar) and honey and as much cayenne pepper as you can tolerate. Maybe start out with a dash or two and work up to 1/4teaspoon or more. Try 1 tablespoon of the vinegar with 1 tablespoon of honey and add the cayenne and mix and take by the teaspoon every 20 minutes or so.

You can also add the above to warm water and sip on it as a tea. Some also gargle with it.

Others just warm water and put cayenne pepper in it and gargle with it every 20 minutes.

4)   Homeopathy. - thenoseknows

5)   There have actually been a lot of studies that have shown that Fish Oil can help with ADD/ADHD. It seems too simple, and that may be one reason it wasn't really looked at closely for this, but I wasn't surprised it would help when I thought about it. The EPA and DHA in Fish Oil help with all sorts of things including heart health, skin health, and brain health. There was a good article at http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-391503/Fish-oil-calms-children-better-Ritalin.html that covers some of this as well.
Give it a try... it's economical, safe, and easy. Just make sure that the company you get it from uses Molecular Distillation because that's currently the only safe way to remove any trace contaminants of any heavy metals. Of course, if you aren't sure about the dosage or the benefits, you may want to consult with a holistic doctor, as they may have other additional options available to them.

There are also a lot of people who have found some relief from limiting sugar, artificial colors/flavorings, and going with less (or no) processed food to take away those possible causes as well. From research I've done, Fish Oil tends to help more, but both work even better together. Good luck and I hope I helped! - oldtimekid2
