Why do we eat chicken and cow and not cats, dogs and rats?

Question 1
Why do we eat chicken and cow and not cats, dogs and rats?...  Apart from some Chinese people. Is there a reason or just social conditioning that we got conditined towrds certain animals and others are considered as pets or dirty?

Answers
1)   because it tastes better... DUHHHHHHH.

also because we raise cows and chickens to eat them, give them chemicals in their food to make em huge for more meat. believe me if cats tasted good we would make them fat and eat them. - Mike M

2)   Because the companies make more money from these animals ... easier to grow and tastes good. Other animals such as cats, dogs eat human waste and are much more prone to diseases. Also, the quality of the meat is not that great. However, if you are chinese, none of this explanation applies as they eat almost anything. - MM

3)   I've eaten dog before when I was in the Philippines and it taste like pork but a little stronger, I've also ate jelly fish, sea horse soup and snake soup. I think your right, people are just conditioned to eat a certain way depending on the area or country where they are raised. In the Bible it's tells you which types of animals are clean and unclean and describes the ones that are ok for eating. - Mark

4)   Cows are herbivores that use grass very efficiently. They can eat things we can't, and then we can eat them. (Although nowadays we mostly feed them grain).

Chickens aren't pure herbivores, but when they aren't eating plant matter they are eating bugs (which we don't eat).

Cats are pure carnivores. You would have to raise animals for THEM to eat. Anything they could eat, we could.

Dogs are omnivores that lean farther towards the carnivore end of the spectrum then we do, Anything they could eat we could, PLUS they need a lot of protein.

It is more efficient to eat herbivores. You will find most things we raise for food are herbivores. - MagnusMoss

5)   Because you don't eat your pest control, your hunting partner, or your actual pests.

Chicken and cows were raised to be eaten. It's a waste to eat animals that serve other purposes. - Weise Ente

6)   Mike M - you obviously have no idea how dog, cat or rat taste like. You will be pleasantly surprised if you do.

Skinned cats were sold successfully for generations in many meat markets around Europe as rabbits.
Dogs are delicacy for the Chinese and favourite food of some Eastern Europe population.

The humble rats are awesome food in Asia. Of course they aren't the average sewer rats.
And what about the large rodent coypu. Very delicious, nutritious and used in hospitals as the best non-fat diet type meat.

One Uni Professor did an interesting test on him self by going to the Canadian wilderness for three summer months with few hundred mouse traps and his camping gear.
Before his departure, he had his proper and thorough medical and was found in good health.

For the next three months the professor ate only the field mice and drank fresh water. Poor sod spent all day every day, just by opening the traps and preparing his daily meal made out of dozens of mice.

No other meat or berries or greens. Three months later he arrived back in Toronto and went for his medical immediately.

Imaging the surprise of anyone involved in this interesting experiment.
His bill of health has been more than superb.
Any possible nutrient important to human well being, has been presented in his body in abundance.

That is what I call the superb job of our Mother Nature.

7)   Probably cultural, Mary. We tend to be turned off by eating our pets and rodents. - Gary Y

3)   Mainstream medicine is science based, and while science is not perfect it is the very best tool we have. If not for science there would be no ultrasound machines to begin with.

I can assure you that it performs one hell of a lot better for cancer detection than alternative methods like aura reading, applied kinesiology, iridology, crystal waving, or psychic empaths. - Gary Y

4)   Very. Not perfect of course, but it's competition is laughable. - Weise Ente

5)   science isn't perfect, i'd question the doctor who didn't perform a biopsy or any sort of follow up testing, a tool is only useful if you actually use it, if you think mainstream medicine isn't scientific just because someone was misdiagnosed, its like saying water doesn't put out fires when you use a garden sprinkler to try and put out a forest fire. - evirustheslaye

Question 3
do you feel that you need to take a vitamin supplement? Why or why not?...

Answers
1)   No, I'm healthy and generally maintain a healthy balanced diet and lifestyle. - Gary Y

2)   Gary, are you sure your mental health is ok? - Frank

3)   Yes.

It is impossible to get the needed nutrients that we need from the foods that we eat. We are also dealing with more toxins, more pollution (air, water, soil, etc), and the list could go on and on. Even eating organic food may not be enough considering the environment. [1] Not to mention that it is impossible to get certain vitamins in there needed amounts apart from supplements.

Take Vitamin E for example which for a very small price gets you a minimum of 100 IU. Now consider what the RDA was set at. This quote in particular was telling "One reason the RDA was lowered is that "dieticians were having difficulty devising diets of natural foods which had the recommended amount (30 IU) of vitamin E." [2] So for a fraction of the cost you can get 3 times the amount of the RDA for Vitamin E.

We also know that "....numerous studies have shown, however, that vitamin supplements do increase people's blood levels of those nutrients." [3] So I believe that it is best to eat a well balanced diet and take supplements as well. - Chicago Mike

4)   no, because i eat a variety of foods and have no real health problems.

the vitamin/supplement industry is rife with misconceptions as to how vitamins and minerals work... they advertise it like like this "bones are made with calcium, so if you take more calcium your bones will be even stronger" the body doesn't work like that. - evirustheslaye

5)   I don't "feel", I know - have a condition that makes me prone to deficiencies, so I take one. - Tink

Answers
1)   it feels weird, everything is all slowed down - soco fanatic

2)   you get dizzy depending on the dose. You will become too tired to cry or hyperventilate or any specific symptoms of an anxiety attack. you will feel like you are falling backwards, like you are free falling. you will get very sleepy like you are being hypnotized. then it will get hard to keep your eyes open. then you will just fall asleep. - Gracie

3)   The first few times you take it, you feel a little dazed. It DOES help. I have severe Panic Disorder and it really helps with it. I take 0.5 mg, twice daily. So 1 mg a day. After the first few times of taking Xanax, you won't notice the dazed, high feeling as much. Your body will build up tolerance to it and after about a month - you won't even feel it. It's a nice 'dazed' feeling though. All your worries just slip away.. ahhhhh - LuvPekes
