Why would my Doctor nearly kill me?

Question 1
Why would my Doctor nearly kill me?...  i had a cardiac problem caused by ventolin i was given at hospital which cause potassium problems. why?

Answers
1)   They call it medical practice for a reason. He was just practicing on you. - David

2)   Are you serious, just because you had an unpredictable side-effect to a drug that was designed to save lives does not mean anyone was trying to kill you. - Fez

3)   negligence - Robert C

4)   All drugs can have negative side effects. This sort of side effect is dose related, and I've only seen this happen once in the ER when giving a patient high dose nebulized Salbutamol (Ventolin). Basically, ventolin is a selective B2-agonist, which promotes the movement of K into the intracellular space, and can cause hypokalaemia.

As I said, this is only seen in high doses of nebulized or IV salbutamol.

Hypokalaemia affects cardiac function. It's a risk benefit balance. Your Doctor wasn't trying to kill you. If you were given Ventolin because you were having an asthma attack for example; this helped keep your airways open, and basically kept you alive. Providing hypokalaemia is recognized, it can be rectified, and cardiac arrhythmia's managed.

The good news is, we are aware of little problems like this, Doctors have a good understanding of human physiology and pharmacology. Doctors are able to manipulate drugs to give the desired therapeutic effect. In some cases, Salbutamol is even used to reverse hyERkalemia.

Edit: thenoseknows is ignorant. She does not understand basic physiology or pharmacology and is basically scared of what she doesn't understand.

If it wasn't for modern medicine, you may not even be alive right now. The alties like concepts such as magic water because it offers them simplicity. Science and medicine is too messy and complicated for them to they tend to discard it completely. - Rhianna does Medicine Year 1

5)   Hundreds of thousands of people are killed and maimed by properly prescribed prescription drugs and treatments every year. Conventional medicine turns a blind eye towards the problems that drugs cause -- to them it's just collateral damage. They don't know anything else, haven't been trained to do anything else but prescribe drugs. If you need more drugs to fix the problems caused by other drugs, it's a financial gain for them, bad for you.
If you want to solve your health problems and avoid toxic/dangerous "side-effects" then you can find a natural health care professional like a Homeopath or Naturopath. - thenoseknows

6)   But you didn't die, so it all turned out well. As for seeing a naturopath ... I'd like to know what treatment they would give you when you rush in with an acute asthma attack - I don't think waving a few crystals would do much.

What treatment did you expect? If you take salbutamol you only have to read the instructions on the inhaler to know about the potential side effects. Obviously if you're in hospital with a major problen you're going to die without it. So chalk it up to modern medicine that you can complain you had a side-effect. - Nitram

im not taking prozac to get high! im taking it do to depression, and i smoke pot without prescribed

Answers
1)   Marijuana doesn't react with other drugs, I don't approve of taking pills to get high though so I'm not going to fully answer this question - Greg D

2)   DO NOT COMBINE DRUGS!!!! O cant stress this enough, doing this will kill your body so fast its unbelievable. But if prozac is a antidepressant or a ADHD pill it can sometimes stimulate a high and make you feel super fast.... But seriously dont do it, it fucks your body up. - ?

3)   Most drugs interact with other drugs, especially if they are illegal.
you are taking prozac for a reason, this reason may have something to do with the amount of marijuan you are smoking - 9litres

4)   There is no difference. I know people who take anti-depressants and smoke and they have no problem with it. - mana_bean84

5)   I took prozac for a while about 15 years ago and found absolutely no negative side effects or interaction with pot.

You really don't notice anything with prozac anyway, just that you're calmer and less inclined to depression. Pot at least makes you feel good.

Remember, marijuana is *not* a drug. - Auntie Anne Arkey

Question 3
Why Do People Bother With Prescription Antidepressants When 5HTP Turns Into Real Serotonin & Is OTC?...  I found out about 5HTP which turns into serotonin when it crosses the blood-brain barrier and you can buy it in health food stores. I bought some and its helped clear up my depression like magic.

My question is why do people even bother with expensive prescription antidepressant pills when:
1. These pills often lead people to suicide, doing the exact opposite of what they were intended for.
2. They either mimic serotonin or just move it around. How can that compare to something that turns into REAL serotonin?

Since serotonin is the chemical that is lacking in depression then the logical thing is to get something that will actually result in more serotonin if possible and not just a mimicker or something that moves serotonin that's already there around.

Is this just lack of awareness i.e. doctors don't tell patients about it because they need to make money?

Answers
1)   I didn't know this but I will try it myself. I suffer mildly with depression and anxiety and I'm terrified of prescription meds. Doctors are scandalous and greedy bastards! Email me some info if you will!! - Debbie

2)   People have to empower themselves by doing research into their own health conditions and apprise themselves of all the information. You can save yourself AND save your money. You have to decondition yourself from the notion that the sick care system works and that drugs are the answer to health problems: they're not. Often they do more harm than good. They simply suppress symptoms. They do not correct imbalances or remove the cause of the problem -- this is real healing that works in the long term.
Regular MD's get next to no training in nutrition, and the drug companies are pretty much running the medical schools, so it's about what you'd expect to be happening. Moreoever, plenty of medical associations will revoke a doctor's license for prescribing/mentioning anything other than prescription drugs. Is this a racket? Yes. - thenoseknows

3)   i with other person can you email me the details aswel - misscacazzy

4)   MDs have a "best practices" policy they must adhere to. If they discuss treatments or remedies with patients that are outside what he pharmaceutical industry hand in hand with the AMA state, they can lose their license. If, on the other hand a patient says to a doctor, can this or that hurt me, the doc will usually say, "no, but you're wasting your money or there's no science supporting it." Both statments may or may not be correct. But if you've done your homework and go to the doc with the scientific studies done in hand from searching the internet, and you say, "I'm going to do this and I'd like you to help me with it." the docs then can help you without the fear of losing their license. They may even tell you what they know about what you're proposing, even tho they couldn't have unless you FIRST brought it up - Francie S
