Question 1
How to cover up weed in your pee?...  My friend A smoked on Saturday and has a physical thursday. I understand it stays in your bladder lining for 26 days what should he do?

This isn't me don't worry it's my friend he wants to be on the school team and his dad would massacre him if he found out.

Is alternative medicine inherently untestable?...  Is that why so little of this stuff is subjected to any rigorous testing?

Or maybe the practitioners just know that tests will fail?

1)   Or maybe it doesnt receive the major funding and government kickbacks that the pharmaceuticals do. - Heather H

2)   No, not inherently untestable. But there are some problems, like difficulty with designing adequate controls like sham acupuncture. Also with herbals, these suffer from lack of consistency with quality and seasonal variations. Otherwise if proponents claim their particular branch of alt med works then this is a testable claim. Science frequently tests 'natural' chemicals and if they are shown to be effective they are integrated accordingly. The problem with much of alt med is the research that they do is typically poor quality. And the literature shows; the better the quality of research into alt med (especially homeopathy), the poorer the results.

3)   If you go to pubmed and enter a search for 'alternative medicine' and 'quantitative methods' you'll find a treasure trove of info (sorry I can't post a direct link, its an internal search engine)

Simply put, somethings are simply problematic in terms of measurements.

4)   no, it's just that the mainstream, which has always worked to destroy it, finds this a convenient excuse to dismiss it. if they honestly were interested in getting sick people well, which of course they are not, they would conduct honest investigations into why and how alternatives obtain the results that millions of people testify that they do. i would love to see a head to head comparison, a public contest, between upper cervical specific chiropractic and medicine. let each take care of a sample of patients with a range of various conditions, cease treatment for a month to let the medical patient's dope wear off, then evaluate them. of course, in most cases, chiropractic's results would kick medicine's ass up and down the block, which is why you'll never see such a contest. - Mr E

What vitamins remain in foods that are microwaved or heated in a microwave?...  Are all the B vitamins destroyed in foods that are microwaved?

1)   For some reason, the alties don't like Microwaves, I've seen NaturalNews and Mercola ranting about microwaves before too. The reason varies.

All cooking methods can potentially destroy vitamins nutrients, it really depends on the temperature (boiling is particular can be a problem) and duration the food is cooked for. However, microwaving food often means food is cooked for shorter periods and lesser temperatures...compared to cooking on the hob for example. - Rhianna

2)   as far as i know the only thing that reduces the vitamins are boiling and maybe basting. yet it is still in the water that remains! that is why the old good cooks used the water to make things like potato's and pasta! - John Whittington

logically if i take these natural supplements and meditate and excercise everyday i should feel my depression?...  im depressed. if i take 5-HTP (natural substance that easily converts to serotonin) and st. john's wort (herb which prevents serotonin from being re-absorbed in the nerve cells) everyday then i should see a difference in my mood right? especially if i also meditate (meditation heightens the alpha brainwave which in turn stimulates serotonin production) and excercise (also stimulates serotonin production) daily my depression should get alot better right?

2)   You've obviously done your homework. The only thing with either of these substances (5-HTP, St. John's Wort) is that they've been proven to work sometimes. Not always. And St. John's Wort was also proven to work as well as an SSRI for mild depression, but not as well for moderate to severe depression.

Exercise also has a positive effect for mild depression, though some studies showed that too much exercise could be contraindicated and make matters worse.

Omega 3 fish oil has also shown to be somewhat effective.

You might want to add a safe place to talk about your depression -- that helps too.

If you consistently combine all of these ...you're doing a pretty good job of covering the most popular proven alternative remedies for depression -- I hope they work for you and good luck! - Niki P

3)   Congrats on all you're doing to help yourself!
It depends on the doses you're taking of the two supplements, their quality (standardized extract of St. John's Wort vs. dried herb), how long you've been taking them, and how long you've been exercising (and what type, length of time per workout...) How long have you been meditating, what type, and how much per day? Taking a good quality multivitamin/mineral might help.
Omega-3 fatty acids have been found to be helpful in treating depression - one of the few dietary supplements that's been studied for this.

How's your diet? An interesting book is The UltraMind Solution by Dr. Mark Hyman. It's a bit marketing-heavy, and he sells the supplements that he recommends, but the information is generally good, and he addresses depression specifically. Common-sense nutritional advice, but also innovative thinking about detoxification, inflammation, etc.

If your depression continues, please do see a doctor about it.
