Why does my Job exist?

Question 1
Why does my Job exist?...  I'm a non US trained Osteopath and I primarily treat Musculo-skeletal problems.
Now there is no shortage of people within the medical profession who deal with the musculo-skeletal system. In most of the world patients can get free referral to Orthopaedic specialists, physio-therapists, pain management specialist etc yet our books are full of patients who forgo all that and pay to come and see us for treatment.
When all this other help is out there why does my job exist?
Is it because the way the medical profession operates creates the demand?
Clearly musculo-skeletal medicine is not practiced correctly or i would go bankrupt.

On this site I see the pro-medical profession lobbyists and the Anti-altmed lobbyists becoming frustrated that in-spite of all their efforts to gang us out of practice, gain exclusive rights to health-care provision, withdraw our funding or medicalise us when the other 3 have failed, professions like mine continue to remain popular and grow.

Doesn't the medical profession realise that it is creating the demand for us the way it operates.
The medical profession should stop trying to change the way we work.
It should instead look at the way it works and respond accordingly to the people that pay for it rather than take the belligerent stance of it knowing what is best for us and we should just do what we are told.

Your thoughts please......
I agree that people don't always know what is best for them.
However a complaint I hear again and again is the medical profession assume people N

NEVER know whats best for them and consequently ignore everything they say and assume the patient is just an idiot. People walk away and try something else when:
1; They refuse to accept being treatewd like this.
2; The above and/or the medical profession has got it wrong, not helped them or made the problem worse.
I see this far too frequently for it to be funny.

@Nate. ~How does 7 million osteopathic appointments in the UK per annum sound?

Answers
1)   You're assuming the demand for a product means it's a good product. You're also assuming that because your job exists, it's counterpart must be inferior. Neither of these things is necessarily true.

You use vague words like "popular and grow." What does that mean? Is your market share up 200%, a 1% share last year, but 2% this year? Be more specific.

People know what is best for them...ha. - Nate

2)   hate to admit it, but nate has a point. to say that people know what is best for them isn't really proof. just look at all the people out there who still blindly trust conventional medicine, buying hundreds of billions in drugs every year that don't make them healthy but do make them sicker, and this in the face of non-stop lawsuits arising from injuries and deaths from their use. proof that the maxim is true, that you'll never go broke underestimating the intelligence of the public. - Mr E

3)   Why does homeopathy, which is a transparent scam, exist?

Because people believe it. Popularity has nothing to do with efficacy. - Weise Ente

4)   This is the appeal to popularity fallacy. Assuming something must work or be superior because it's popular, this does not follow. Popularity does not in any way demonstrate efficacy.

Providing you stay within your realms of minor musculoskeletal problems, there is no real issue. The moment you start making claims beyond this, is the moment you become a quack. And you always tread on wafer thin ice where that is concerned, Lighty.

And no one is trying to gang you out of practice either. But in science based medicine, we actually bother to discard treatments that don't really work. Osteopathy has very limited uses. You seem to always ignore the lack of evidence base for it ( And don't even think about bashing Psychiatry and surgery in response to this. I went through this with you in Tink's question, it's not a valid argument or comparison. ) - Rhianna

5)   Nothing sells like total garbage in a pretty package.

Example:
There are currently millions of security guards employed, but for the most part they really do nothing at all except stand and look authoritative in a uniform with a badge. Yet companies shell out billions a year just for the feeling that someone is there making them feel safe, despite the fact that they are untrained, unarmed, and usually have a couple of misdemeanors on their record.

People's ignorance, plus a slick sales pitch can sell just about anything. - Flizbap 2.0

6)   You have a "job" for the same reason fortune tellers and faith healers have a "job", even though there is no evidence for efficacy.

A better question is why your "job" gets no respect. Even the NHS allows only very limited payment to UK-trained osteopaths. So long as you insist on diagnosing and treating gullible customers by laying your fingers on their head and conversing with their "Inner Physician", your "profession" will continue to be the butt of jokes.

I understand UK-trained osteopaths give pretty good massage. Your best strategy to attain for professional credibility would be to renounce osteopathic quackery and join the Guild of Good Time Masseurs. - Omron
